Father knows best, as the 1950s TV show would have you believe. But how much do you know about dads? From father-and-son presidential duos to the dads at the center of hit songs, movies and television series, fathers have shaped how we’ve grown as families and as a nation. And they can teach you how to tie a necktie and other essentials of daily life.

Sponsored by the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA, the first citywide Father’s Day celebration took place on June 19, 1910, in Washington state. Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea to pay homage to her father, William Jackson Smart, a single dad who raised Dodd and her five siblings after Dodd’s mother died.
