Ain’t No Party Like an ‘Office’ Trivia Party!

Dunder Mifflin devotees, this quiz is for you

It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since  The Office, based on the cult series from the U.K., hit American airwaves.

On March 24, 2005, we got our first look at the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, Inc., in Scranton, Pennsylvania. And over its nine seasons, we fell in love with regional manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell, 62), office administrator Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer, 50), sales rep Jim Halpert (John Krasinski, 45), customer service representative Kelly Kapoor (Mindy Kaling, 45) and office temp Ryan Howard (B.J. Novak, 45). Rainn Wilson, 59, told AARP that the main similarity between him and Dwight Schrute — the beloved “assistant to the regional manager” he played — is their “social awkwardness.” And isn’t that why we fell in love with this gang of well-meaning misfits? They represent the social awkwardness in all of us.

It’s time to clock in and take our quiz to see how well you remember  The Office.

Question 1 of 12

What is the official slogan of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, Inc.?

It was none other than Michael Scott who came up with “Limitless paper in a paperless world,” created for the company’s first commercial in the Season 4 episode “Local Ad.” Although the team’s version was ultimately not chosen by corporate to run, the Office colleagues watched it on a disc Jim created. Using Pam’s animated logo, the commercial was a moment that had us tearing up right along with the characters.

Question 2 of 12

The Office was based on the British sitcom with the same title. Steve Carell played the role originated by this actor.

Ricky Gervais, 63, set a high — or was it low? — bar by playing David Brent, the clueless and cringeworthy manager of British paper supply company Wernham Hogg. Gervais, who was a co-creator of both the original and the U.S. show, would later reprise his character as an interview candidate to replace Michael Scott.

Question 3 of 12

According to Dwight, what is Michael’s greatest fear?

Michael Scott

In a conversation between Dwight and Ryan (played by B.J. Novak) about Michael’s greatest fear, we learned, at least according to Dwight, that his boss and mentor fears nothing, though Ryan guessed loneliness or women. Dwight said he would have also accepted “snakes” as an answer.

Question 4 of 12

What prank did Jim not pull on Dwight?

Jim and Dwight

Jim established his prankster role right from the pilot episode, putting Dwight’s stapler in Jell-O. He also stole a box of Dwight’s personal stationery and used it to send faxes signed by “Future Dwight,” warning him that he had to take immediate action to prevent something bad from happening. Jim also knew that Dwight was nervous about public speaking and volunteered to help him prepare his acceptance speech after being named Dunder Mifflin's salesperson of the year. He gave him snippets of other famous victory speeches, but didn’t tell him they were from Lenin and Mussolini. Jim actually pulled the phone-in-the-ceiling prank on Andy (Ed Helms, 51).

Question 5 of 12

What was the working title of Michael’s action-adventure screenplay?

The plot of “Threat Level Midnight” involved a secret agent named Michael Scarn (played by Michael himself, of course) who comes out of retirement to take on his arch-nemesis, Goldenface (played by Jim) and stop him from blowing up the NHL All-Star Game. Michael’s epically ridiculous screenplay was first introduced in the second season, and we finally see the finished film in Season 7.

Question 6 of 12

What nickname does Andy give Jim?

John Krasinski, Ed Helms
Colleen Hayes/NBC/Courtesy Everett Collection

Jim gained the nickname "Big Tuna" after fellow paper salesman Andy “Nard Dog” Bernard witnessed Jim eating a tuna sandwich. Andy tried a variation on the nickname with Ryan, dubbing him “Big Turkey,” but it never stuck.

Question 7 of 12

At which Dunder Mifflin event did Jim and Pam have their first “real” kiss?

Jim and Pam’s first kiss is a hotly debated topic among Office fandom, but Jenna Fischer set the record straight on Office Ladies, her podcast with fellow castmate Angela Kinsey, 53. Although a drunken Pam gave Jim a peck on the lips at the restaurant during the Dundies, Fischer maintains that their first real kiss happened on Casino Night at the end of Season 2.

Question 8 of 12

Which employee made a big to-do about cooking a pot of chili for the office and then proceeded to spill it all over the floor?

Kevin Malone (Brian Baumgartner, 52) was serious about chili — more serious than he was about his job, anyway. He’d stay up late making “Kevin’s Famous Chili” for the office, dicing tomatoes and pressing garlic. But in Season 5, it was all for naught. He spilled the chili while trying to carry it into the office with oven mitts.

Question 9 of 12

Michael always had it in for this character:

Michael hated Toby Flenderson (Paul Lieberstein, 58 who was also an executive producer, writer and showrunner for part of the run) because, as he saw it, his job as manager was to make the office fun, while Toby’s job as the human resources guy was to make it lame. Actually, Michael should have appreciated Toby for stopping him from following his impulses and getting himself fired. But no good deed goes unpunished, and Toby himself was fired in the series finale.

Question 10 of 12

According to Dwight, his ancestors had a series of jobs outside corporate America. What wasn’t one of those jobs?

Dwight’s ancestors included farmers, hunters and yes, even time travelers. But not martial artists. “They never had to worry about how they got ahead,” Dwight explained of his forefathers. “They just had to put food on the table and not alter the past.”

Question 11 of 12

At Phyllis and Bob Vance’s wedding, Michael revealed the bride’s nickname back in high school. What was it?

Phyllis Smith, Bobby Ray Shafer
Trae Patton/NBC/Courtesy Everett Collection

During his toast to Bob Vance (Robert Shafer, 66) and Phyllis (Phyllis Smith, 73) at their wedding, he said, “You look at her, and she’s kind of matronly today, but back in high school, I swear her nickname was Easy Rider.” This prompted Bob Vance to kick Michael out of the wedding.

Question 12 of 12

Which characters were not romantically linked?

Angela and Dwight’s relationship was … complicated. Their original courtship ended because he euthanized one of her cats. But they continued to hook up, first while she was engaged to Andy and later while she was married to a state senator who was still in the closet. Kelly and Ryan hooked up throughout the series and ran away together, as viewers discovered in the series finale. But Phyllis and Stanley (Leslie David Baker, 67) were never a thing. She dated and married Vance Refrigeration owner Bob Vance and while Stanley does have several extramarital affairs, none were with his co-workers.
