The groundbreaking series Good Times debuted on CBS in 1974. Beyond being the first prime-time sitcom portraying a two-parent Black family, during its six-season run, the show depicted serious subjects like discrimination, poverty, unemployment, gang violence and child abuse. In honor of the program’s 50th anniversary, take our Good Times quiz, and see how well you remember Florida, James and the rest of the Evans family.

Question 1 of 10

In what major U.S. city did Good Times take place?

Good Times was set in Chicago — in particular, its infamous Cabrini-Green public housing project, which was plagued by drugs and gang violence for years before being demolished in the early 2000s. Good Times cocreator Eric Monte set the show in Cabrini-Green because that’s where he grew up. “The whole show was about his life,” Carlena Evans, daughter of Mike Evans — who created Good Times with Monte — stated in a 2022 interview. “A lot of those characters were people he grew up with.”

Question 2 of 10

True or false: Executive producer Norman Lear coined the famous Good Times catchphrase “dyn-o-mite!” and delighted in its success.

Audiences couldn’t get enough of Jimmie Walker and his comedic catchphrase, “dyn-o-mite!” Director John Rich loved it so much, he decided Walker’s character, J.J., would utter it in every episode. But executive producer Norman Lear wasn’t a fan. “Norman Lear detested it,” Walker once said in an interview. “He hated it. It literally made him throw up.”

Question 3 of 10

Good Times was a spin-off of what popular 1970s TV show?

Good Times is a spin-off of the hit 1970s comedy Maude — which itself is a spin-off of the hit 1970s comedy All in the Family. In Maude, the titular character hires Florida Evans, played by Esther Rolle, as her housekeeper. Florida regularly appeared in the show alongside her husband, Henry, played by John Amos. When Maude and All in the Family producer Norman Lear decided to produce a series about a Black family, he made Florida and Henry (whose name was changed to James) its stars.

Question 4 of 10

True or false: One of the actors on The Jeffersons helped create Good Times.

Good Times cocreator Mike Evans is best known for playing Lionel Jefferson, the son of George and Louise, on The Jeffersons. Evans originated that role on Norman Lear’s All in the Family, where the Jefferson family was originally Archie Bunker’s Black neighbors. (Lear created The Jeffersons to portray a wealthy Black family instead of the poor Black families that dominated U.S. airwaves at the time.) Later, Lear collaborated with Evans to develop Good Times

Question 5 of 10

Which female pop star appeared on Good Times when she was a child?

In Season 5, Willona Woods (played by Ja’Net DuBois) adopts Penny Gordon, whose abusive birth mother abandons her to Woods’ care. Playing the role of Penny was 11-year-old Janet Jackson, who made her TV debut on Good Times in 1977 and remained on the show for two seasons until it ended in 1979.

Question 6 of 10

Which Good Times actor released a hit single at the height of their Good Times fame?

Norman Lear recruited actor Ralph Carter to play the Evans’ youngest child, Michael, when he was just 12 years old. At the time, Carter was starring in the Broadway musical Raisin. Although Janet Jackson went on to become Good Times’ most musical alumnus, Carter was the first to release a hit single: In 1976, he released a disco album titled Young and in Love. The album’s two singles, “When You’re Young and in Love” and “Extra, Extra (Read All About It)” reached No. 10 and 12 on the Billboard R&B music charts, respectively.

Question 7 of 10

Actress Ja’Net Dubois (Willona Woods) co-wrote the theme song for what popular 1970s TV show?

In addition to acting, DuBois was a talented songwriter and musician: She cowrote and performed “Movin’ on Up,” the beloved theme song for The Jeffersons, which aired on CBS from 1975 to 1985.

Question 8 of 10

Which of the following is NOT a lyric in the Good Times theme song?

The gospel-style theme song for Good Times was composed by Dave Grusin and performed by singers Jim Gilstrap and Blinky Williams, with lyrics by husband-and-wife songwriters Alan and Marilyn Bergman. For decades, fans have wondered about one hard-to-decipher line from the song. While some insist it’s “hangin’ in a chow line,” others hear it as “hangin’ in and jivin’.” In a social media post in 2023, cast member BernNadette Stanis set the record straight: “hangin’ in and jivin’” is correct.

Question 9 of 10

How did Good Times patriarch James Evans die in the show’s fourth season?

John Amos

After Jimmie Walker became the breakout star of Good Times as the Evans’ eldest child, J.J., producers began focusing on the character at the expense of other storylines. John Amos, who played James Evans, became so vocal with his objections that he was fired after the show’s third season. In Season 4, it’s revealed that James died in a car accident while pursuing a new business opportunity that would have moved his family out of the projects.

Question 10 of 10

True or false: Good Times was recently rebooted in cartoon form.

In April 2024, Netflix released a reboot of Good Times in the form of an adult-oriented cartoon. Coproduced by Ranada Shepard, basketball player Stephen Curry, Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame and Norman Lear — the show’s original executive producer, who died in December 2023 at age 101 — it features the same premise as the original Good Times, but with a new generation of Evans-family characters. Netflix calls the animated series an “edgy, irreverent reimagining of the TV classic.”
