Packing Tips for a Stylish and Comfy Lake Getaway

Choose basics that can easily mix and match for a multitude of different looks

Preparing for a lakeside vacation is way different from a day at the beach as I learned a few years ago at Candlewood Lake in Connecticut. Even though I’m an experienced beauty and fashion editor/stylist and personal shopper, three days of lake living — which included humid, windy weather, swims in icy water, an attempt to row a canoe(!) and brisk campfire evenings — were an eye-opening lesson. A day can go from blazing hot and muggy to chilly or rainy in a flash. You don’t need a bigger suitcase, just a better plan. Here’s your checklist.

1. Minimize colors to maximize wear.

Limit your packing to 10 to 12 items of clothing based around one neutral color, with white and a single pop of color. My strategy provides enough versatility to mix, match and layer that you won’t need more than that. Check your closet for color guidance, but for many women, the base color will be navy, black, khaki or tan, plus plenty of white pieces to brighten up the look. Among the dozen items in your bag, take more tops than bottoms. Here’s a sample plan: the basic Universal Thread Women’s 90s Ribbed Tank Top in White ($8, target.com); the classic Hanes Women’s Long Sleeve Cotton V-Neck T-Shirt in White ($10, walmart.com); the Banana Republic Factory Relaxed Cotton T-Shirt in Navy Stripe ($24, bananarepublicfactory.gapfactory.com); an oversize shirt; a sleep tee; a lightweight sweatshirt; the cozy cotton Old Navy Women Shaker-Stitch Sweater in White ($28, oldnavy.gap.com); Madewell Women Kick Out Crop Jeans in Pure White ($128, madewell.com); lightweight cropped pants or shorts such as the Gap Factory 9” Mid Rise Denim Bermuda Shorts in Medium Wash or Dark Wash ($25, gapfactory.com); two swimsuits, including the Andie Swim Malibu One Piece in White ($112, andieswim.com); and a pull-on midi skirt such as the Sonoma Women’s Goods For Life Tiered Long Midi Skirt in Deal Bay ($25, kohls.com). Trust me, it all works. You can layer the white shirt over the tank and knot it at the waist over the skirt; wear the sleep tee as a beach cover-up; wear a white tee and white jeans as a monochromatic look; and tie the sweater over your shoulders for last-minute warmth as the day cools down.

2. Pare down your beauty routine.

Taking a break from the daily grind doesn’t mean slacking off on looking good. A lake getaway is not the time for perfect blowouts, multistep skin care or full makeup. Rather, it’s an opportunity to reduce the number of products and tools you use with problem-solving, time-saving shortcuts for skin, hair and makeup. Instead of day and night regimens, try one do-all moisturizer such as the Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre ($29, cvs.com), which functions as a 24-hour hydrator, and multitasking sun protection and makeup such as Drunk Elephant Umbra Mineral Cream SPF 30 Tinted Face Sunscreen ($36, ulta.com), which comes in three skin-compatible shades. Windblown hair can feel grubby even when clean, and humidity can amplify out-of-control texture and frizz. Instead of lugging straightening tools and serums, take along a few accessories, such as the Aimee Hair Claw Clip Set in Sand or Ivory ($24, anthropologie.com) for updos, and neutral-toned scrunchies or bands such as the Goody Damage-Free Hair Elastics, Assorted Neutral Colors ($4, cvs.com), which won’t damage even fine, thin hair. Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo, Travel Size ($3, target.com) absorbs oil and odor between air-dry washes and gives roots extra oomph. A big pair of sunglasses can function as makeup during the day — no need to do water-resistant liner and mascara. Save those for evenings out.

3. Stick to stylish but active swimsuits.

Lying around on a beach chair is a lot different from an energetic day cruising on a pontoon boat, teaching your grandkids to float or hiking along the water. This is not the vacation for your sexy V-neck or ruffle-trimmed off-the-shoulder suit. For all the above reasons, stylish high-neck swimsuits have gained traction as an alternative to the usual (and usually nonsupportive) sports brands designed for serious swimmers. Good examples include the Jantzen Women’s Layla Cross Back High Neck One Piece Swimsuit in Cobalt, Pantheon Blue or Goddess Green ($99, swimoutlet.com), the Swimsuits for All High Neck Wrap One Piece Swimsuit in Black ($90, target.com) and the Andie Swim The Malibu One Piece in Black, Cherry Red, Navy ($112, andieswim.com). All allow you to bend, move, squat or get as sporty as you like, and they multitask as a bodysuit when paired with any bottom.

4. Pack your version of “shorts.”

Bare legs are a tender topic for many women on vacation in summer. Skorts — the shorts alternative getting social media attention — really only work for those who play tennis or pickleball and/or are comfortable with a high-on-the-thigh miniskirt hemline. For everyone else, that leaves two solutions. Those who love the subtle shape and hold of blue jeans can opt for Bermuda-length shorts in stretch denim. Knee-down discolorations can be camouflaged with a light self-tan prep before leaving home (do your entire body for a seamless effect). My favorite solution (and the one I find many women love) is lightweight white cropped pants. The hue and abbreviated length feel summery and “shorts-like,” making them an ideal substitute worn with a tee or high-neck white tank top, and they also work for cool evenings and dinners. Try the Gloria Vanderbilt Women’s Shape Effect Wide Leg Crop Pants in Vintage White ($20, kohls.com), the Liz Claiborne Women’s Linen Mid-Rise Wide Leg Pull-On Pants in White ($47, jcpenney.com), the Chico’s Brigette Wide-Leg Cropped Pants in Alabaster ($49, chicos.com) and the Lee Women’s Denim Capri in Bright White ($23, walmart.com). Yes, capris are once again on-trend! Just be sure crops and capris end below the wide swell of the calf for flattery.

5. Bring shoes you can walk and wade in.

Not kidding! One of the biggest mistakes women make on lake and river getaways is packing fashion sandals and high wedges or thinking loafers and flip-flops will get them through. Yes, the former are great for dinner at a dockside restaurant and the latter for everyday life and pedicures, but how about boating, fishing and waterside activities or treks on pebbly shorelines? Not a chance! You get to choose between a sporty, rugged sandal/sneaker hybrid such as the contoured Keen Women’s UNEEK Astoria Sandal in Birch/Silver Birch ($102, rei.com), a chunky mule such as the Merrell Women’s Hydro Moc in Black ($60, zappos.com) or the deceptively fashionable Lands’ End Women’s Espadrille Beach and Water Shoes in Navy or Black ($60, landsend.com) and Sea Star Beachwear Women’s Beachcomber Espadrille in Dark Navy or Black ($139, seastarbeachwear.com). Waterproof and neoprene, they look like regular espadrilles but can handle a downpour. Though a little pricey, these shoes make ideal spring/summer/fall rain footwear at home too.

6. Be prepared for changing weather and the unexpected.

Temperatures may be steamy, sunny or bright but overcast. That doesn’t mean a cold front or downpour can’t happen. Three things on your must-pack list can help: the lightweight, folds-up-to-nothing Lands’ End Women’s Waterproof Hooded Packable Raincoat in Deep Sea Navy, White or Vintage Straw/Sunlight Lime ($130, landsend.com) with zip pockets, a waist cinch for shape and a mid-thigh length that covers your rear; a sweatshirt such as the L.L.Bean Women’s Ridgeknit Half-Zip Pullover in Dark Marine Blue ($89, llbean.com); and a layering Free Fly Women’s Shade Performance II Hoodie in Bright White or Slate Blue ($74, nordstrom.com) with a UPF 50+ sun protection rating. For a little peace of mind, pack insect spray or bug wipes along with emergency supplies in the Johnson & Johnson Band-Aid All-Purpose Portable Compact First-Aid Kit ($28, cvs.com) complete with hand-cleansing wipes, acetaminophen, anti-itch and antibiotic creams, a cold pack, gauze and bandages — TSA-approved, you-never-know prevention for travel anywhere.
