Here’s the good news: The holidays mean more socializing and not just on screens! The bad? The festivities often collide with unanticipated skin, hair and makeup mishaps. Sometimes you do get a little advance notice, like a botched haircut the day before a party. Other times it’s a last-minute blooper like cake-y makeup or a smudged manicure just as you’re out the door. Perfecting imperfections ASAP is my specialty. As a veteran beauty editor, I’ve picked up the tricks that work like instant Photoshop. Get your looks back on track fast with six DIY tips. If your ...

1. Skin is acting up.

Your face looks dry, lined, puffy and your 10X magnifying mirror is not exactly helping things. This is not the time for heavy spackle. In fact, a soothing 15-minute facial massage right before doing makeup is the secret to reviving a healthy glow and reducing puffiness. All you need is a double-sided jade or rose quartz face roller, your usual face serum (if you use one), your moisturizer and an eye cream. Chill the roller in the freezer or fridge for 15 minutes prior to beginning. Cleanse and blot your skin. Apply and massage each product separately (serum and then moisturizer), using the wide end of the roller for face serum and cream, the small roller for under the eyes. Start the face massage at the jawline and keep rolling in an upwards and outwards movement following facial contours from inner face towards sides. Use light pressure. The silky texture of the products provides “slip” for the roller to slide over your skin. No roller at hand, and you’re puffy and late? Rinse an ice cube briefly under the cold-water faucet and run it gently over your face and under eyes before applying skin care and makeup.

2. Hair had a disaster cut.

You went in for a trim and you got bangs you never asked for, too many shaggy layers or a bob when you wanted a lob. Don’t panic. This is a poorly timed — but temporary — situation.  Break out the rollers (Velcro, sponge or heated), mousse, statement earrings and hair accessories, and get creative with what you have. Add volume, waves, curls or more texture to instantly blur the shape of any cut and give it charisma (or “rizz” as the kids say). For example, you can turn a flat pixie into an edgy crop by adding lift at the roots and tousling the crown, flick out layers for a piece-ier effect or build them up with rollers for a sexy modern update on Hollywood glam. Use hair accessories to change or control the shape and length — from tortoiseshell clips to elegant jaw clips for pulling hair back or up — and hairbands to make bangs vanish in seconds. Can a mature women wear this? You bet. And what if you’ve just left the salon and have five minutes at home? Put on your biggest and best statement earrings to draw the attention there. Sometimes the worst chops at 5 p.m. become favorites by midnight once the “love your hair” compliments start pouring in.

3. Teeth are dingy or lips are chapped.

Need something to smile about? If your usual grin is plagued with stains thanks to red wine, coffee, tea and blueberries, and your lips are dry and flaky, calm down. Though whitening strips and in-office whitening more effectively brighten dingy teeth, there’s an easy two-step DIY way to get a megawatt smile tonight. First improve lip texture with a mild exfoliating scrub like Burt’s Bees Conditioning Lip Scrub with Honey ($10, cvs.com) or a homemade mix of honey and sugar applied with a warm wet washcloth. Go easy on the scrub. Lip texture is thin and vulnerable. Slick on a velvety lip balm like Aquaphor Lip Repair Stick ($10 for 2, walgreens.com) as a primer and then choose a blue-based lipstick like cool reds, rosy pinks and berries, which counteract yellow tones in the teeth. Vibrant examples are Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Love That Pink, Love Is On or Cherries in the Snow ($11, cvs.com), and L'Oréal Color Riche Satin Lipstick in True Red or Red Passion ($11 each, ulta.com). Skip warm colors like orange-y reds, golden pinks and coral no matter how appealing. Even die-hard nude-lip fans should opt for chilly pink-y nudes rather than warm brownish ones.

4. Face and body color are mismatched.

Do you use a self-tanner or bronzer to give your winter complexion a boost? Same. Blah winter weather often inspires us to fake a sun-kissed look and defy indoor temperatures with deep V necklines, elbow-sleeved tops and off-the-shoulder sweaters. However, a last-minute mirror check frequently reveals that face is on a beach in Florida, but your décolletage and arms are in snowy Chicago. Here’s where bronzer steps in and saves you and your outfit from a wardrobe redo. Apply cream or powder bronzer (yes, the same one you use on your face) to the sides of your neck, along your collarbones and shoulders. Whisk or blend some bronzer on forearms (if they show) and tops of hands for a more uniform seamless effect. And if you love having a warm sunny look, use a gradual self-tanner on your body through the winter or add tanning drops to your body lotion. It will give you a seamless, even look no matter what you wear.

5. Nail polish smudges, dents or chips just before leaving.

You’re pulling on your tights or leggings, rummaging in your bag for the car keys, slipping on your coat, and there goes the red holiday manicure. After painting your nails with the precision of Edward Hopper, they now look more like a Van Gogh. There are three ways to correct the situation. If the polish is still wet and you’re dealing with one or two fingers, dip the distressed nails into polish remover and smooth over the smudge till it’s blended. Or camouflage the damage by adding a sparkly topcoat with texture to disguise the bumps and ridges. Have an artsy flair? You can even turn just the smudged nail into an accent nail and add a contrasting color — stripe or dot — to hide all. If you have four minutes, you can make polish dry faster by submerging nails in an ice cube bath for two minutes and then letting them air-dry for another two minutes. The icy water helps harden and dry the polish faster.

6. Makeup is a cake-y, smeary mess.

Your foundation looks heavy, the liner went on too thick, the eye shadow has sprinkled onto your cheeks, the blush looks too bright and patchy, and your mascara is clumping. You’re wondering if it’s too late to take it all off and start over. This usually happens when you’re rushing or have applied “evening” makeup right over your day makeup. All you need for a five-minute repair are two makeup sponges, a couple of cotton swabs, a spoolie brush and some micellar water. Dampen one makeup sponge with the micellar water and press it to your face, dabbing in a stippling motion (don’t rub!). This will remove excess makeup but leave enough tint and coverage to blur imperfections. Be sure to dab expression lines and creases around the mouth, nostrils, eyes and forehead where makeup pools. Dampen a second sponge and the swabs with micellar water. Proceed to dab away under-eye shadow and mascara smears, lifting off the excess as you go. You can even use a swab to thin liner that’s too wiggly, harsh or wide. Loosen clumped mascara with the same micellar water and sponge, but swipe up under the top lashes (as if you are applying mascara) and then comb them through with a spoolie brush. Perfect! Got only two minutes? Run a sink of hot water and carefully bend over the basin. The steamy heat will soften the layers of foundation, concealer, blush and bronzer, and you can easily dab away any excess with a makeup sponge or facial tissue.
