Celebrity Milestone Birthdays in December

Dec. 1

Bette Midler, 70: The Divine Miss M released her album It's the Girls! last year, featuring covers of girl group classics. More recently she's been cast to appear in the movie Freak Show, based on the 2007 book, about a cross-dressing teen.

Woody Allen, 80: A new challenge for the movie director: creating a TV series — his first — for Amazon Studios. Meanwhile, Allen’s been spotted in New York’s Central Park filming a still-untitled movie with Steve Carell, Jessie Eisenberg and Kristin Stewart.  

Dec. 4

Cassandra Wilson, 60: The jazz great’s 2015 album, Coming Forth by Day, features Wilson’s renditions of Billie Holiday tunes. She told NPR, "I couldn't wait to get inside of this material and spruce it up, reinvent it, do some wild and crazy things to it."

Kathy Garver, 70: Garver was 20 when she landed the role of 15-year-old Cissy on the sitcom Family Affair. Now a professional audiobook narrator, she still acts and has just released a memoir, Surviving Cissy: My Family Affair of Life in Hollywood.

Dick Van Dyke, 90: While promoting his new book, Keep Moving and Other Tips and Truths About Aging, the entertainer has said he exercises daily and eats “light and fresh.” Another age-defying influence, perhaps, is Arlene, his 44-year-old wife.

Jacques Pépin, 80: The legendary French chef recently talked to AARP The Magazine about another passion: painting. When he paints, usually with acrylics or watercolors, he says, “I don’t have anything to prove.”

Phil Donahue, 80: As the king of the TV talk-show genre (Oprah, of course, was queen) for 26 years, he won 11 Emmys and hardly left a controversial topic unbroached. He and actress Marlo “That Girl” Thomas have been married since 1980.

Dec. 22

Diane Sawyer, 70: She stepped down last year as an ABC anchor after decades on American TV screens, but she’s far from retired. In April she landed the exclusive interview with Bruce Jenner in which he discussed his transition to Caitlyn.
