Fall in Love With Our Rom-Com Quiz

There’s only one way to ace it — listen to your heart

There’s no better time than Valentine’s Day to take in a rom-com. After all, this beloved film category has every common romantic trope — kissing in the rain, grand gestures, falling in love with your best friend. And while they may be cheesy and predictable, they’re also funny, sweet and irresistible.

Take our amorous exam to honor Valentine’s Day and the lovestruck genre we can’t stop watching.

Question 1 of 10

Rob Reiner’s beloved 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally…  gave us which iconic quote?

In the memorable scene, Sally, played by Meg Ryan, 63, delivers a rousing fake orgasm in the middle of the busy New York’s Katz’s Delicatessen, which is still open, and ends with an onlooker — played by Reiner’s mother — uttering the iconic line, “I’ll have what she’s having.”

Question 2 of 10

What song does Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack, 58) play in the “boom box scene” in the 1989 film Say Anything?

Although it’s now synonymous with teen romance, the scene almost didn’t happen: Cusack didn’t want to do it — he thought the gesture was out of character for rebellious Lloyd — and Peter Gabriel, 75, initially denied permission to use his song over confusion about what film it was for.

Question 3 of 10

True or false: You can book a stay at the suite that Julia Roberts, 57, and Richard Gere, 75, shared in the 1990 movie Pretty Woman.

You can stay at the hotel featured in the movie — the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, California — and it even offers a “‘Pretty Woman’ for a Day” experience. However, only the property’s exterior appears on screen; the penthouse featured is a film set that was built into the Presidential Suite of the nearby (and since demolished) Ambassador Hotel.

Question 4 of 10

Tom Hanks, 68, and Meg Ryan made movie magic in the 1993 movie Sleepless in Seattle. In what movie did they reunite for an unofficial sequel?

In You’ve Got Mail, rival New York booksellers fall in love online without realizing one another’s identity. Although the characters are different, Nora Ephron — who wrote and directed both films — created the film explicitly for Hanks and Ryan, and always considered it to be a sequel of sorts to Sleepless.

Question 5 of 10

Alicia Silverstone was cast in the 1995 rom-com Clueless after starring in music videos for what rock band?

Reese Witherspoon, Keri Russell and Gwyneth Paltrow, 52, were also considered for the part, but director Amy Heckerling, 70, gave the role of teen fashionista Cher Horowitz to Silverstone — at the time, a mostly unknown actress whose biggest claim to fame was her role in early ’90s music videos for the rock band Aerosmith.

Question 6 of 10

In 1996’s Jerry Maguire, what does Tom Cruise’s Maguire do for a living?

Jerry McGuire

Cruise, 62, plays an unscrupulous sports agent whose life changes when he has a moral reckoning about how he does his job in the beloved film from director Cameron Crowe, 67. The character was inspired by real-life sports agent Leigh Steinberg, 75, and one of his clients, professional football player Tim McDonald, 60. (Cuba Gooding, Jr., 57, earned a best-supporting-actor Oscar for his portrayal of a character who resembles McDonald.) Steinberg served as a consultant on the film and even makes a brief cameo in it.

Question 7 of 10

True or false: In the original ending of the 1997 film My Best Friend’s Wedding, Julia Roberts meets a new love interest.

Roberts, 57, plays a romantic saboteur who tries to break up her best friend’s engagement when she realizes she’s in love with him. Ultimately, she fails and ends up dancing at the movie’s eponymous wedding with her gay friend. In the original ending, Roberts meets another man, but when test audiences revolted — they didn’t think her villainous character deserved a happy ending — a new ending was written.

Question 8 of 10

In the 1999 rom-com Notting Hill, what color is the door to Hugh Grant’s flat?

Along with actors Hugh Grant, 64, and Julia Roberts, one of the film’s biggest stars was the blue door to Grant’s character’s flat. The door belongs to a residence that was owned by the movie’s screenwriter, Richard Curtis, 68. To this day, it’s a popular tourist attraction in London’s Notting Hill neighborhood — as is the Notting Hill Bookshop that appears in the film.

Question 9 of 10

True or false: The 2001 rom-com Bridget Jones’s Diary is based on the dating life of lead actress Renée Zellweger, 55.

False: The film is based on a book by English author and screenwriter Helen Fielding, 66. The book began as a newspaper column when British newspaper The Independent asked Fielding to chronicle her life as a single woman in London. Fielding wasn’t comfortable exposing her life in print, and instead she agreed to write an anonymous column written by an exaggerated, fictional character. Thus, Bridget Jones was born.

Question 10 of 10

In the holiday rom-com Love Actually, the opening and closing scenes take place in what setting?

The 2003 film opens and closes with emotional real-life footage of people reuniting with loved ones at the airport. Filmmakers stationed hidden cameras at London’s Heathrow Airport for a week to capture the reunions. Whenever they witnessed a particularly touching moment, crew members would materialize and ask the subjects to sign a waiver.
