Hey, You Guys! It’s the ‘Goonies’ Quiz!

You won’t need a pirate map to win this trivia challenge (but it couldn’t hurt!)

Goonies never say die, but they do get older. June 7 marks the 40th anniversary of the theatrical release of The Goonies, the beloved 1985 movie about a group of kids trying to track down pirate treasure to save their town.

Several of the film’s stars — including Sean Astin, 54; Corey Feldman, 53; Martha Plimpton, 54; Kerri Green 58; Robert Davi, 73; and Joe Pantoliano, 73 — reunited in April for Awesome Con in Washington, D.C. And this week, a big celebration is planned in Astoria, Oregon, where the film was set. But probably the best way to celebrate is with a private screening in your own home, reliving the adventures that seemed so magical back in the mid-’80s.

How much do you remember about this timeless classic from the mind of Steven Spielberg? Let’s find out. This quiz is hard, but not as hard as a punch from Brand, where you wake up with your clothes out of style. We’re just taking a trip down memory lane.

Question 1 of 12

What dots the “I” in the Goonies title during the opening credits?

The skull isn’t just a spooky effect — it becomes a plot point later in the movie, when the kids have to play a dead pirate’s bones like an organ to save their friends.

Question 2 of 12

How did The Goonies get their name?

The Goon Docks isn’t a real place — it’s a fictional neighborhood in Astoria, near the Oregon coast. Additionally, you can visit the Goonies’ house, which is still standing and is even being restored for the movie’s 40th anniversary.

Question 3 of 12

What’s the name of the dance Chunk is forced to perform before he’s allowed to enter Mikey and Brand’s house?

chunk from the movie the goonies

Jeff Cohen, who was 10 years old when he played Chunk, improvised the dance during auditions to make the other child actors laugh. The dance went on to become a staple of pop culture, making appearances in shows like 30 Rock and Family Guy, and even earned Chunk his own bobblehead. As for Cohen, he moved on from the Truffle Shuffle and is now a founding partner at an entertainment law firm in Los Angeles.

Question 4 of 12

When digging through Mikey’s attic, the gang discovers an old treasure map that purportedly leads to a hidden stolen treasure. What year is on the map?

Chunk is initially confused by the number and wonders aloud, “Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?” To which Mouth (Corey Feldman) responds, “No, it’s your top score on Pole Position.” (For anyone who wasn’t a fan, Pole Position was a Formula One racing game that was an arcade hit in the ’80s.)

Question 5 of 12

Who does the treasure map belong to?

One-Eyed Willy, who got his name because of his missing left eye, isn’t based on an actual real pirate — but his ship may have been real. A 17th-century shipwreck along the coast of Oregon allegedly inspired Spielberg’s treasure-hunting storyline.

Question 6 of 12

Brand (Josh Brolin, 57) has a few disparaging nicknames for his younger brother Mikey (Sean Astin). Which of the following is NOT one of them?

a scene from the movie the goonies

Brand could be cruel to his younger brother, but there was plenty of real love between the two.

Question 7 of 12

What’s written on the note that bad guy Jake Fratelli leaves for the prison guard to discover?

Jake (played by Robert Davi) is a member of the Fratelli crime family, and in the movie’s opening moments, he breaks out of prison by tricking a guard into thinking he’d committed suicide by hanging. “You schmuck,” his note read. “Do you really think I’d be stupid enough to kill myself?” With the guard momentarily distracted, Jake punches his way to freedom.

Question 8 of 12

Which of the following is NOT one of Data’s inventions that appeared in the movie?

scene from the movie the goonies

Richard Wang, better known as Data (played by Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, 53), is such a huge James Bond fan that he has “007” inscribed on his belt buckle. The same belt buckle, coincidentally, that can shoot a suction dart attached to a cable. He also invented the Pinchers of Peril, a pair of chattering teeth connected to a large spring inside his sleeve, and Slick Shoes, which squirt oil from their heels. The Glasses of Death, which could shoot darts, were also a Data invention, but that scene was cut from the finished film.

Question 9 of 12

True or false: Michael Jackson once used the bathroom at Chunk’s house.

Chunk had a habit of telling a lot of tall tales, like the time he saved old people from a nursing home fire, and ate his weight in Godfather’s pizza. But the Michael Jackson story wasn’t entirely fictitious, at least according to him. “Michael Jackson didn’t come over to my house to use the bathroom,” Chunk finally admits. “But his sister did.”

Question 10 of 12

How many lawns did Brand have to mow to pay for his bike?

Brand’s bike, according to his younger brother Mikey, is his “most favorite thing in the world!” In fact, it took him (based on Mikey’s ballpark math) a grand total of “376 lawn jobs to get that bike!” Honestly, we have some questions. He was either charging way too little for his yard work, or he bought the most expensive bike ever sold in 1985.

Question 11 of 12

Who sings the Goonies theme song?

The song, “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough,” is one of our favorites. And not just because the video was so nutty — we’re not the only ones who’ve wondered what the heck was actually going on with it. Lauper, 71, resisted performing it for years, but started singing the song again later in her career, and we — and all Goonies fans — are grateful.

Question 12 of 12

John Matuszak, who played Sloth, was a professional athlete before joining the cast of The Goonies . What sport did he play?

Matuszak played with several NFL teams, and during his time as a defensive lineman for the Oakland Raiders, he helped them win two Super Bowls. In addition to The Goonies, he was in the movies CavemanThe Ice Pirates and One Crazy Summer, and had parts in TV shows like M*A*S*HThe A-Team and The Dukes of Hazzard. Sadly, he passed away in 1989 at the age of 38.
