Don’t You Forget About This ‘Breakfast Club’ Quiz

The world’s an imperfect place. But take our trivia quiz about the beloved 1985 teen drama and try for perfection anyway

If you were a teenager during the ’80s (hello, Gen Xers!), all it takes is the opening chords and “hey, hey, hey, heeey” of the Simple Minds song “Don't You (Forget About Me)” to transport you back 40 years ago to Feb. 15, 1985, when the blockbuster movie The Breakfast Club premiered.

Directed by John Hughes (who also gave us classics like  Sixteen Candles and  Pretty in Pink), the plot follows five high schoolers who spend a Saturday together in detention. There’s the “criminal” John Bender (Judd Nelson), the “athlete” Andrew Clark (Emilio Estevez), the “princess” Claire Standish (Molly Ringwald), the “brain” Brian Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall) and the “basket case” Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy).

As Hughes explained in an interview with the website Flickering Myth in 2009, his goal was to make a realistic movie about teenagers: “People forget that when you’re 16, you’re probably more serious than you’ll ever be again. Kids are smart enough to know that most teenage movies are just exploiting them.”

But are YOU smart enough to ace our Breakfast Club quiz? Let’s find out!

Question 1 of 13

The movie begins with a quote from what famous rock n’ roll singer?

The lyrics from Bowie’s “Changes” — “And these children that you spit on/ as they try to change their worlds/ are immune to your consultations/ they're quite aware of what they're going through” — is the first thing we see on screen. The idea was suggested to director John Hughes by actress Ally Sheedy.

Question 2 of 13

Every student had a different reason for ending up in detention. Which of the following is NOT one of them?

Allison is the only character who  didn’t land in detention because of some misdeed. She actually volunteered to be there. As she explained, “I didn’t have anything better to do.”

Ally Sheedy

Question 3 of 13

True or false: Shermer, Illinois, the setting for The Breakfast Club, is a real Chicago suburb

Shermer exists only in the imagination of John Hughes, although it is based on a real place: Northbrook, Illinois, another Chicago suburb that was originally named Shermerville, and where Hughes lived as a teenager. He used the same fictional setting numerous times. “Everybody, in all of my movies, is from Shermer, Illinois,” the filmmaker said in 1999.

Question 4 of 13

In the opening montage, we briefly see a plaque at the school featuring photos of former students picked as “Man of the Year.” One of them is introduced later as an adult. What’s his name?

There’s a good reason Carl (played by actor John Kapelos, 68) is the only empathetic adult in this teen-centric universe. As he tells the kids, he’s “learned a couple things” about teen life after his years as a janitor. “I am the eyes and ears of this institution, my friends,” he says.

Question 5 of 13

In an attempt to humiliate Mr. Vernon, Bender mockingly asks the vice principal if he’s been raiding the wardrobe of which pop performer?

Vernon responds to the insult by giving Bender the first of many new detentions and reminding him who’s really in charge. “Don't mess with the bull, young man,” Vernon says menacingly. “You'll get the horns.”

Question 6 of 13

What does Bender say that his abusive dad gave him for Christmas?

Bender angrily shared an anecdote about getting cigarettes for Christmas while berating Claire over her diamond earrings, a symbol to him of her privilege. “I bet those were a Christmas gift, right?” Bender yells as Claire breaks down into tears. “You know what I got for Christmas this year? … I got a carton of cigarettes! The old man grabbed me and said ‘Hey, smoke up, Johnny!’” And that may have been the least of the insults and physical abuse that Bender's dad inflicted on his family. Earlier, when Brian can barely believe that another story of abuse is real, Bender asks him, “You wanna come over sometime?”

Question 7 of 13

Why did Brian get a fake ID?

Director Hughes encouraged his cast to improvise, and Anthony Michael Hall’s “so I can vote” line made it into the final cut. However, Brian (Hall’s character) might not have had much luck at the polling place. As Andrew points out to him, his fake ID lists him as 68 years old.

Question 8 of 13

Allison creates an unusual sandwich for lunch, using unorthodox ingredients. Which of the following is not part of the recipe?

The sushi is actually Claire’s lunch, which Andrew finds just as mystifying. Coincidentally, if you’re tempted to try Allison’s bizarre sandwich, you might want to think again. The fine folks at NPR attempted to recreate the recipe back in 2010, and as they reported, it “was way worse than any of us expected.”

Question 9 of 13

What popular actor was fired from The Breakfast Club before filming began?

Although director John Hughes was “ecstatic” to have Rick Moranis in the cast — the SCTV alum signed on to play Carl the Janitor — he was less than thrilled when Moranis decided to give his character an over-the-top Russian accent. It was up to producer Ned Tanen to fire the actor after deciding that “the Russian caricature would pull the audience completely out of what was really a serious movie.” Both John Cusack and Nicolas Cage were also briefly considered for roles, but ultimately never cast.

Question 10 of 13

How many extra days of detention does Bender get?

It all starts going badly for Bender when he tells vice principal Vernon to "eat my shorts." The detentions keep rolling in, finally ending at eight. “The next time I have to come in here,” Vernon warns the students, “I'm crackin' skulls!”

Question 11 of 13

Before the band Simple Minds made it a hit, which of the following artists was NOT offered the chance to record “Don't You (Forget About Me)”?

Bryan Ferry thought an early demo of the song “sounded like a hit to me,” but he “didn’t want the distraction” from his own album. There were rumors that Billy Idol also passed on the chance to record it (which he eventually did in 2001), but Billy himself has denied this. Chrissie Hynde loved the song, but she was pregnant at the time and didn't want to shoot a video to help promote it. So she talked her husband, Simple Minds’ lead singer Jim Kerr, into recording it instead.

Question 12 of 13

True or false: Director John Hughes makes a cameo.

When Andy gets dropped off at school in the opening scenes, it’s Anthony Michael Hall's real mother and sister in the car. However, when he gets picked up at the end, Hughes himself is behind the wheel, playing Andy’s dad. He also makes a brief appearance in Ferris Bueller's Day Off as a pedestrian pushing his way between two taxi cabs.

Question 13 of 13

At the end, what does Claire give to Bender before they go their separate ways?

Early in the movie, Bender memorably berates Claire for wearing expensive earrings likely bought by her rich father. “Are those real diamonds, Claire?” Bender asks with derision. But their relationship changes over the course of the movie, and in the final moments, before they go their separate ways, Claire places one of her earrings in Bender’s hand. What does it all mean? Is this symbolism for how they aren’t so different after all? The mystery is just part of what makes the movie so compelling.
