A powerhouse for 24 seasons, “the Rocket” won seven Cy Young Awards, more than any other pitcher in MLB history. Controversy surrounding his alleged anabolic steroid use has kept him out of the Baseball Hall of Fame, and this year, he was removed from the ballot after 10 years of eligibility (he received 65.2 percent, not the required 75 percent, of the vote) — though he can still get in through the so-called Today’s Game Committee.

Aug. 5: Patrick Ewing, 60

In 2017, the 11-time NBA All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist returned to his alma mater as head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas. His track record hasn’t exactly been stellar: As coach, he has a 68-83 record, one winning season and one appearance at the NCAA tournament, but the university recently released a statement in support of Big Pat.

The Malaysian-Chinese superstar has been earning Oscar buzz for her turn as a mom who taps into the multiverse in this year’s absurdist comedy Everything Everywhere All at Once, and she followed that up by voicing Master Chow, an acupuncturist and kung fu fighter, in Minions: The Rise of Gru, one of the highest-grossing films of 2022. Before the year’s out, she’ll appear in another sure-to-be-blockbuster, the much-anticipated Avatar: The Way of Water.

A four-time Emmy nominee for playing the silver-haired Roger Sterling Jr. on Mad Men, John Slattery went on to star in Spotlight as Boston Globe editor Ben Bradlee Jr. and as Iron Man’s father, Howard Stark, in Marvel Cinematic Universe films. This June, he teamed back up with Man Men costar Jon Hamm for the Audible Original scripted podcast The Big Lie, about an FBI special agent investigating three blacklisted filmmakers in 1950s Hollywood.

The two-time Oscar winner has been getting quite a bit of tabloid attention for reconnecting with (and recently marrying) Jennifer Lopez, but he also has been hard at work with another old collaborator, Matt Damon. Following their roles together in The Last Duel, they currently are filming a biopic about Sonny Vaccaro, the Nike salesman who secured a long-shot endorsement deal with Michael Jordan. Affleck is directing the project, which they’re cowriting and coproducing, with Damon starring as Vaccaro and Affleck playing Nike cofounder Phil Knight.

Following his turns on a ripped-from-the-headlines drama (The Morning Show) and a political satire (Space Force), The Office star is adding a new genre to his TV résumé: psychological thriller. In FX’s The Patient, which premieres Aug. 30, Carell plays a psychotherapist held hostage by a serial killer (Domhnall Gleeson), who demands that he help him curb his homicidal tendencies. We’re not in Michael Scott territory anymore!

The acclaimed director of Selma and When They See Us worked on two very different TV projects this year: In January, she premiered her CW superhero drama Naomi, based on a DC comic about a Superman-loving teenager who develops powers of her own; and in March, HBO Max debuted DMZ, a dystopian miniseries about a medic (played by Rosario Dawson) who searches for her son in a demilitarized Manhattan after a second Civil War.

It has been 45 years since comedian Paul Reubens first debuted his trademark character, Pee-wee Herman. The red-bowtied manchild has gone on to appear in movies, on television, on Broadway and, most recently, in a 2016 Netflix original film. Last year, HBO Documentary Films announced that Uncut Gems directors Josh and Benny Safdie would be producing a two-part documentary about the man behind the gray suit.

Aug. 30: Cameron Diaz, 50

After her unexpected turn as Miss Hannigan in the 2014 remake of Annie, Cameron Diaz retired from acting to focus on her organic, vegan-friendly wine brand Avaline. This summer, she announced that she’d be staging a comeback with the Netflix comedy Back in Action. To ease her return to Hollywood, her costar Jamie Foxx set up a meeting between Diaz and someone who knows a thing or two about unretiring: Tom Brady.
