Key takeaways
- Warm-weather clothes sometimes emphasize common body issues, but smart cuts and fabrics can help.
- Relaxed shirts, V-neck tops and wide-leg pants create balance and a smoother look.
- Small design details, from sleeves to shoe straps, change proportions for the better.
“Every T-shirt shows my back fat and bra rolls!”
“I want to go sleeveless, but my flabby upper arms don’t. Can I?”
“Shirtdresses are trendy but not exactly belly-friendly.”
“I love skirts and espadrilles, but my big calves are a problem.”
So you think the time for body-shaming is over? Spend a few hours in a fitting room with mature women trying on spring clothes and you’ll hear phrases like, “Batwings!” “Back boobs!” “Cankles!” The name-calling spews from the lips of otherwise confident women of every size and shape who find the seasonal shift to lighter, barer styles a challenge. How do I know? I’m a beauty and style editor and personal shopper for women over 50 who hears every body vs. fashion complaint under the sun once warm weather arrives. Here’s a 6-step master class in how to give up the griping and get into a style groove. If you have:
1. Full, fleshy upper arms
If your first thought is “OK, I’ll just wear long sleeves,” hold it right there. Plenty of long-sleeve tees are now cut so narrow they give generous upper arms a stuffed-sausage look. Meanwhile, short, fashion-y sleeves that puff, flutter or extend in a cap style don’t help, either. They end at the widest part of the upper arm, drawing attention to it.
Tank-top wearers have another arm issue (and yes, I find more women over 50 wanting to go sleeveless in summer). Unfortunately, most tanks have wide-set straps that sit right at the top of the shoulder, where the upper arm begins. They’re bra-friendly, but they also highlight the fleshy upper arm.

My advice? Get over your T-shirt habit and switch to airy linen or gauze button-downs, like the Gap Women Linen Blend Oversized Shirt in Shirting Blue, Neon Pink Rose or New Off White ($80, gap.com); the Gap Factory Women Linen-Blend Easy Shirt in Shirting Blue, Pink Flamingo or Optic White ($24, gapfactory.com); or the J.Crew Factory Women Double-Gauze Button-Up Shirt in White, Bistro Blue, Bright Amethyst or Faded Moss ($40, factory.jcrew.com). They’re cool to wear, super fashionable and have a relaxed or oversized fit through the sleeves. All you need to do is roll the sleeves or turn back the cuffs, then push them up for a just-below-the-elbow or three-quarter look that displays your trim forearms. In white, they can even be your new version of the basic white tee.
Tank-top fans should look for styles with cutaway armholes. Styles like the Everlane Women Racerback Tank in Pointelle in Black, Olive Night or White ($48, everlane.com); the Banana Republic Factory Ribbed Racer Tank in Black, White, Gray or Preppy Navy ($15, bananarepublicfactory.gapfactory.com); and the H&M Women Ribbed Cotton Tank Top in Dark Dusty Pink, Black, White and Navy Blue ($13, hm.com/en_us) have armholes that start higher, closer to the neck, to visually elongate and slim the upper arm. For extra muffin-top coverage, try wearing a button-down shirt open, and layer the tank beneath it.
