If you’ve been longing to get away – but stay within the United States – you’re not the only one. In a recent survey asking AARP members about their future travel plans, 86%1 of them said they plan to travel within the U.S. in the coming year. The trouble is choosing where to go.

Texas may be the perfect solution. Why? Because the state has so many options. Fantasizing about a beach vacation? Texas has beaches. Want to explore a beautiful national park? Texas has you covered. Does the idea of a food tour whet your appetite? How about a shopping trip with your girlfriends? Or checking out world-class live music?

In Texas, you can cross off all the items on your bucket list, whatever they may be. And here are four more reasons why the Lone Star State may be your next dream destination.

1. Texas has some of the best food in the country. Good news for the 71%2 of AARP members who listed “exploring places to eat, drink, and shop” among their travel priorities. Did you know that Texas has four different kinds of barbecue? Where you are in the state will dictate what you’ll find on the menu. And, of course, you’ll find excellent traditional Tex-Mex dishes all over the state. Plus, these days, the restaurant scene has a variety of exciting choices courtesy of critically acclaimed chefs of all backgrounds. So, whatever you’re craving, chances are good that Texas will deliver.

2. You can visit year-round. When the cold weather hits your hometown, escape the chill with a trip to the southern tip of Texas. Sightseeing is top of the list for so many, and Texas offers so much to see. The area is a favorite with bird-watchers who seek out the state’s more than 600 different species. Explore the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, a 120-mile stretch of coastline dedicated to wildlife conservation. Beautiful wildflowers fill the region with color in the spring.

Texas is so diverse, you might forget that it’s all in one place. Learn more.

3. Texas is easy to get to from any part of the country. Because Texas’ biggest cities – Dallas and Houston – serve as hubs for major airlines, it’s easy and affordable to get to the state by plane. Or take the scenic route by car. Travel Texas can help map out a road trip that suits your fancy. Tour wineries or breweries. Sample the state’s best BBQ joints. Stargaze in Big Bend National Park. Or, cruise along the coast.

4. There’s so much to do. It’s a beautiful thing when the place you’re headed has a little bit of everything. Especially since more than half of AARP members (56%3) polled said they like to “explore a variety of recreational activities.” And because Texas is so big, the possibilities are aplenty. Listen to live music in Austin. Go shopping in Dallas. Check out the Gulf Coast’s beautiful beaches. No two trips to Texas are alike. Everybody’s wish list can be granted, whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, traveling with the grandkids, or escaping for the weekend with your book club.
