Staying Fit
Millions of Americans 50 and older rely on some form of government assistance to help stay afloat. However, many may be unaware they’re eligible for additional programs and special offers.
If you receive assistance through programs like Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), here are three beneficial programs that can go a long way to help you balance your household budget.
1. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)
More than 20 million households have enrolled in the ACP from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)1. This benefit program helps ensure families can afford the broadband they need to stay connected for work, school, healthcare, and more. ACP provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward Internet service for eligible households and up to $75 monthly for households on qualifying Tribal lands.
By meeting one of many criteria, you can qualify for the connectivity program. For example, if your household income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines or if you or anyone in your household participates in specific government assistance programs, you’re eligible. This is a just one of the many programs that qualify for ACP, learn more here.
2. Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
This program was created to help families and individuals stay safely warm in the winter and cool in the summer. LIHEAP provides eligible low-income individuals and families with federally funded assistance to pay home energy bills, prevent energy shutoffs, and manage costs related to energy crises. LIHEAP also offers weatherization support to make your home more energy-efficient and assists with energy-related minor home repairs.
You may be automatically eligible for this benefits program if you or your family members participate in other government benefit programs or meet income requirements. Though funded by the U.S. Government, LIHEAP is administered at a state, regional, or local level. Eligibility varies by state. Learn more here.
