Packing for a warm-weather vacation is no longer about checked bags and multiple suitcases. Most women now want to travel “lite” with just a carry-on and a personal bag. How do I know? I’m a beauty and style editor and a stylist/personal shopper for women over 50. So, here’s the good news. An updated lean and mean packing strategy lightens the load and encourages you to pull together looks and essentials that do more with less. Women tell me it’s an ideal lesson in wardrobe management that often leads to a closet clean-out on their return home. Here are the tips that work:
1. Pick a color strategy and stick to it.
Take a look in your closet. Which neutral colors make up most of your summer clothes? Select one or two — black, navy, brown, khaki or beige — and then add basic white pieces. Those who like a pop of color can select one bright or pastel to pep things up. Pack only these three or four colors for maximum mix-and-match versatility.
For example, you might choose navy, khaki and white; navy and white plus red; or beige, white, peach or powder blue. Some women restrict their color scheme further to just black and white.
White pieces are essential, so don’t neglect them. They brighten your skin and outfits, hide sweat stains and reflect light so you don’t feel as hot. Take a look at one color strategy mix to get the idea: the Gloria Vanderbilt Women’s Shape-Effect Wide-Leg Cropped Pants in Vintage White ($50, macys.com), Gap Women 100% Linen Relaxed Shirt in Tomato Sauce Red ($80, gap.com), J.Crew Factory Cotton Sweater-Polo in Black ($45, factory.jcrew.com) and the Banana Republic Refined Scoop-Neck T-Shirt in White ($45, bananarepublic.com).

2. Travel in a comfy, pulled-together outfit.
You may be ready to jump into bare sandals and flowy dresses … but wait till you’re there. A layered “go” outfit in your chosen neutrals (the ones you’re also packing) will elevate your look (and may earn you upgrades) and offer temperature control for chilly planes and terminals.
A formula of pull-on pants, a long-sleeve tee, a light cotton sweater and a fashionable jacket (anything from a classy blazer to a trendy cropped trench or utility jacket) provides comfort and style.
For a perfect example, try the Lands’ End Women’s Knit High Rise Pleated Wide Leg Pants in White ($60, landsend.com), Gap Modern Crewneck T-Shirt in Fresh White ($30, gap.com), the Old Navy SoSoft Lite V-Neck Sweater in Navy Stripe ($17, oldnavy.gap.com) and the J.Crew Factory Short Utility Trench Jacket in British Khaki ($108, jcrew.com). Then add rubber-soled flats like the Cole Haan Cloudfeel Stitchlite Espadrille Slip-On in Navy or Beige ($100, dsw.com) or slip-on sneakers.

3. Make “less is more” your motto.
Remember that everything has to fit into one carry-on suitcase and one personal bag. You can’t pack all the items in your closet that fit your color scheme. This is the time to do a try-on in front of a mirror. Get realistic and leave out any clothes — even in the right colors — that are too small or tight or are “just in case” pieces you won’t wear.
Plan on five tops, four bottoms, three pairs of shoes, two dresses, two swimsuits and one sweater or cardigan, one nightgown or sleep shirt, one yoga pant or leggings, and the items in your “go” outfit. Modify the exact pieces depending on your preferences. For example, you may live in pants and never wear dresses, or prefer packing another dress or two instead of extra separates.
