Ford recalled more than 112,000 F-150 trucks over an issue with the rear axle that can cause a loss of drive power or cause the vehicle to roll away when it’s parked without the parking brake engaged.

The rear axle hub bolt may fatigue, break and damage the axle hub splines, increasing the risk of a crash, said a notification letter from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall applies to certain 2021-2023 model F-150 trucks equipped with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package.

The NHTSA letter said a remedy is “under development.” Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an interim repair if their truck has an issue related to the rear axle bolt breaking.

Ford is expected to send notification letters to the affected F-150 owners on Jan. 29. The company’s customer service line can be reached at 866-436-7332. Ford’s number for this recall is 23S65.

To determine whether your vehicle is affected by this recall, you can search your truck’s vehicle identification number (VIN) on the Ford or NHTSA websites.
