These American beach destinations highlight the sun’s beautiful, bright start and its stunning grand finale

Key takeaways

  • Beaches enhance sunrise and sunset with wide horizons and water reflections.
  • Early hours bring cooler temperatures and a quiet, meditative start.
  • Sunset scenes pair golden light with a growing “dusking” travel trend.

The sun’s spectacular daily shows are extra special on a beach. Each version — dawn and dusk — comes with its own set of benefits.

Just before the break of day, it’s cool and quiet with the sunrise lending a meditative calm. Sunsets deliver magical golden-hour lighting, as well as an opportunity to slow down after a busy day and enjoy nature’s show — a travel trend called “dusking.”

More Ways to Benefit

Both benefit from a beach location. The shoreline facing a wide-open horizon creates a natural amphitheater, where the water reflects the sky’s colorful show. And taking in that beachfront view comes with a host of benefits, including reduced stress and improved mood, according to a study in the Journal of Environmental Psychology.

The following are top beach options in the U.S. to experience the day’s beautiful bookends.

Miami conjures images of pastel sunrises layered behind palm tree silhouettes. Make those postcard-perfect dreams come true at South Pointe Park, 17 peaceful acres that offset the famed party vibes in South Beach. Watch surfers from the beach or South Pointe Pier, or head out to the 9 miles of the paved ADA-accessible Beachwalk. Bonus: Since the park is positioned on Miami Beach’s southernmost point, it’s also a prime sunset spot. The sun sinks into the twinkling Miami skyline.

Greet the sun as it inches above the Atlantic Ocean into a color-painted sky from the windswept, grass-filled dunes at Coast Guard Beach. It’s one of the wild, wide east-facing beaches strung together in Cape Cod National Seashore. The shore was John F. Kennedy’s summer stomping grounds, and he preserved this section of it as president in 1961 “for the inspiration and enjoyment of people all over the United States.” From mid-June to Labor Day, the beach’s small parking area is for Eastham residents and people with handicap placards only. Free shuttle buses run between the beach and the Little Creek parking lot, less than a mile away, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A dreamy sunrise on the West Coast is reason enough to take note, but this one has an even stronger hook: It has a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Tucked into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Kirby Cove beach sits across the bay from San Francisco. You will work a bit for that view. It’s at the end of a steep, wooded mile-long trail that starts near Battery Spencer Overlook, a former military outpost. The outpost is a fine place to catch the morning’s show if you’re not up for the hike to the beach.

Tybee Island, Georgia

This barrier island along Georgia’s Atlantic coast has more than 2 miles of sunrise-primed east-facing beach to choose from. One can’t-miss spot: South Beach at the Tybee Pier and Pavilion. Pair a sunrise viewing with a visit to the Surfing Goat coffee shop, a half-block away. Three miles up the coast, on the island’s other tip, North Beach provides an equally stunning viewpoint. Spot seabirds and massive container ships, and maybe a few dolphins, if you’re lucky.

Mallory Square, Key West, Florida

Legend has it that Tennessee Williams started Key West’s daily sunset party for his habit of setting down his evening drink to applaud the moment the glowing sun dropped into the gulf’s horizon. Today, the Key West Sunset Celebration on Mallory Square starts two hours before sundown with a quirky mix of entertainment. On any given night, travelers might experience bagpipers, sword-swallowers, psychics and comedy shows, alongside food stands selling conch fritters and pineapple drinks. The day’s end is still saluted, in Williams’ purported style, with proper cheers.

Sunset Beach, Cape May, New Jersey

This beach lives up to its name, despite its place on the East Coast. It’s on southern New Jersey’s Cape May Point, a finger of land that juts into the Delaware Bay. As the golden sun lowers into the bay, beachgoers scan for Cape May “diamonds” — water-worn quartz crystals that travel down the Delaware River and wash up on the beach’s shore. You can also grab a spot at Fish House, a no-reservations beachside restaurant serving lobster rolls and sunset spritzes, with plenty of seating facing the storied view. The beach hosts pre-sunset Veterans Flag ceremonies at 7 p.m. every Saturday from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. In July and August, the flag ceremonies also take place on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Oval Beach, Saugatuck, Michigan

Michigan’s Sunset Coast runs along the state’s western edge — hundreds of miles of shoreline strung with sandy beaches and rolling dunes. All offer a front seat to colorful nightly sunsets over Lake Michigan, which feels quite ocean-like. The viewing choices can feel vast as well. Travelers would do well to slot Oval Beach at the top of their list. Locals and regular Saugatuck vacationers know this storied sunset spot, but there’s room for all on the wide white-sand beach. It’s accessible to all, too, thanks to a boardwalk and a free loaner beach wheelchair. While most people simply park in the beach’s paved lot, challenge-seekers can get there via the 303 steps up Mount Baldhead, the tallest sand dune in town.

Santa Monica, California

This Los Angeles–area beach is arguably California’s most iconic sunset spot. Even those who’ve never set foot in the state have seen the Ferris-wheel-topped pier during peak golden hour in TV shows, films and travel campaigns. Experience the sunset in person from the pier, where shops, restaurants and rides supplement the pastel-painted Pacific Ocean view. It’s also a great way to get your beach fix if you have mobility issues. Or walk along Santa Monica State Beach, surrounding the pier, as the sun heads toward the horizon behind that slow-turning wheel, for your own multicolored movie-style end to the day.
