A 2026 market forecast notes river cruising’s appeal to older travelers. Future Market Insights, a global market research firm, projects that people ages 46 to 55 will account for 27.6 percent of river cruisers in 2026. Shirey agrees. “You’re sailing through vineyards, past little villages and into towns where you can simply walk off the ship and start exploring.”
It also suits a proven river-cruise audience: Nearly 9 in 10 travel advisers sell river cruises, and 9 in 10 cite “cruising with fewer people” as a top motivator for clients, according to Travel Market Report’s River Cruise Trends Outlook 2025, based on insights from more than 700 U.S. and Canadian travel advisers.

Timing can make all the difference, and June may be Portugal’s most comfortable month. The days are warm without July and August’s heavier heat, the vineyards are lush and longer daylight keeps excursions relaxed. “I really like June because everything is green and there are fewer people than in the summer,” Shirey says. “The longer daylight also meant we never felt rushed while exploring places like Porto [Portugal] or Salamanca [Spain].”
June also gives the region local color. Angie Brandt, a travel adviser and owner of Both Worlds Travel in Raleigh, North Carolina, points to Porto’s Festas de São João. “What better way to say hello to Portugal than neighborhood block parties, energetic music, parades and grilled sardines?” she asks. For travelers who want culture without an overpacked schedule, June is especially appealing.
