Every day, family caregivers provide vital support that helps parents, spouses, friends and other loved ones live independently in their homes and communities. During National Family Caregivers Month this November, AARP Wisconsin recognizes their extraordinary contributions and says a heartfelt thank you to every caregiver who gives their time, energy and compassion to care for someone they love.

Family caregivers assist with everything from meals, transportation and household chores to managing finances, medications and complex medical needs. Their work may go unseen, but its impact is invaluable.

More Ways to Benefit

According to AARP’s Valuing the Invaluable 2026 research, 59 million family caregivers provided 49.5 billion hours of care in 2024. The estimated economic value of that care reached $1.01 trillion nationwide.

Here in Wisconsin, approximately 1 million family caregivers provide an estimated 560 million hours of unpaid care each year, valued at $11.1 billion. Many balance caregiving with jobs, family responsibilities and their own health and financial needs.

These numbers are powerful, but they represent something deeply personal: a daughter coordinating her mother’s appointments, a spouse preparing meals and managing medications, a neighbor providing transportation, or a friend offering companionship and reassurance. Many people may not identify themselves as caregivers, yet the support they provide is essential.
