Menopause is the stuff of comedy routines, dietary supplements, self-help books, and podcasts. But a recent study shows that many women don’t know much about it.
According to recent AARP research, 64 percent of women 18 and older say we need more doctors who specialize in menopause while stigmas and stereotypes persist across all demographics. Too often, women enter menopause and perimenopause without the knowledge or support they need.
Certified Menopause Coach and AARP volunteer Lisa Witler aims to change that. “Menopause is a life transition that every woman experiences, and we can use it to redefine ourselves,” she says.
AARP Mountain Region is sponsoring Lisa’s series of supportive discussion groups about the phases of menopause, including peri- and post-menopause.
Lisa explains, “We’ll explore how shifting bodies, roles, emotions, and priorities can reshape our sense of self, and how we can meet those changes with compassion, humor, and strength.”
For the first discussion group, Lisa teams up with Breah Parker, a well-being coach and mentor, on Thursday, January 29, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. All sessions will be held at Amerihealth Caritas Wellness and Opportunity Center, 216 Asheland Avenue in Asheville (lower parking lot entrance). All groups are free, but registration is required.
