Lynn spent more than 43 years as a registered nurse helping others navigate health challenges, but she never expected she would one day become a full-time caregiver herself. When her husband, Terry, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease and then prostate cancer just a few months later, Lynn retired early to care for him.

Like many family caregivers, what began as helping Terry manage his health gradually became a full-time responsibility. Lynn took on everything from medication management and doctor's appointments to household chores and yard work. Although she occasionally hired help so she could attend exercise classes and take a short break, the demands of caregiving often left her physically and emotionally exhausted.

More Ways to Benefit

After more than a year of providing around-the-clock care, Terry spent several weeks in a memory care facility while Lynn took time to recharge. What was intended as a temporary stay eventually became permanent after discussions among Lynn, their children, and the facility staff. While the decision was difficult, Lynn is grateful for the care Terry receives and the support provided by the facility.

Today, Lynn's role has shifted from hands-on caregiving to advocacy. Terry is a veteran, and Lynn worked tirelessly to secure the full VA benefits he was entitled to after he was initially granted only a portion. Those benefits now help cover costs that Medicare does not, including room and board at the memory care facility.

Having spent years as a nurse navigator advocating for patients, Lynn understands how important support can be. When she found herself in the role of caregiver, she realized there was no one to guide her through the challenges she faced.

Looking back, Lynn believes caregivers need more resources and support, especially regarding self care.

"If you don't take care of yourself then you don't have the energy to be able to take care of your loved one, it's really finding that balance," she says.

Through close friendships and regular visits with Terry, Lynn has found ways to care for her own well-being while continuing to support her husband. Her story is a reminder that caregiving can be both deeply meaningful and incredibly demanding, and that caregivers need support, understanding, and resources to help them navigate the journey.
