Michael never imagined that caring for his wife, Kathryn, would gradually become a full-time responsibility. Like many family caregivers, his journey began with small adjustments, such as helping with transportation, ensuring she was safe on the stairs, and finding ways to make daily life easier as her health declined due to Alzheimer's disease and bile duct cancer.

As Kathryn’s needs grew, so did Michael’s role. The couple moved to a one-floor apartment to make things easier but still the demands for caregiving grew. With limited outside assistance available, Michael often had to navigate the challenges of caregiving on his own.

More Ways to Benefit

Eventually, Kathryn’s condition reached a point where caring for her at home was no longer possible. Michael made the difficult decision to move her into a long-term care facility, a choice many caregivers face after years of balancing their loved one’s needs with their own well-being.

Reflecting on that journey, Michael believes caregivers need more support for everything they do.

“I think our lawmakers need to understand how much time and effort caregivers devote to taking care of their loved ones,” he says.

Years before they faced these challenges themselves, Michael and Kathryn spent decades working in health care, witnessing firsthand the struggles that often come with aging. When Kathryn’s health began to decline, those lessons became deeply personal.

“My wife and I worked in health care for 30 years and realized most people don’t think about life as they get older and the struggles they will face,” Michael emphasizes.

Michael’s story is a reminder that caregiving often begins with small acts of love but can grow into a life-changing responsibility, one that millions of families navigate every day.
