More than 180,000 Nevada residents are military veterans, along with active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, military spouses, and the families and caregivers who support them. AARP Nevada has gathered free tools, guides and trusted resources in one place to help the military community find what they need, from benefits and health care to caregiving, jobs and fraud protection.

The resources below are free, and most do not require AARP membership.

Caregiving for a Veteran or Service Member

Caring for a veteran or service member often means navigating a separate set of benefits and systems. Protecting Yourself and Your Benefits From Fraud

Veterans, service members and their families are nearly 40 percent more likely than civilians to lose money to scams and fraud, and criminals target them with tactics built around their military background, benefits and sense of trust. AARP's Veterans Fraud Center offers scam alerts, the Watchdog Alert Handbook: Veterans Edition, and prevention tips built for the military community. If you or someone you love has been targeted, the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline offers free, nonjudgmental guidance. Call 1-877-908-3360, Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time.

Jobs and Careers

The AARP Veterans and Military Spouses Job Center helps veterans and spouses turn military experience into civilian careers. It includes a job board of military-friendly employers, resume support and free online courses. Get started at https://www.aarp.org/vetsjobcenter

Health Care and Earned Benefits

Veterans and their families often struggle to know where to begin among VA health care, TRICARE, Medicare and private insurance. The AARP Veterans and Military Families Health Benefits Navigator explains what you may qualify for and how to apply. Find it at https://www.aarp.org/vetshealthnavigator

Nevada Veterans Resources

Nevada Department of Veterans Services. NDVS connects Nevada veterans and families to earned state and federal benefits, operates the state's veterans homes and memorial cemeteries, and staffs accredited Veterans Service Officers who help file claims at no cost. These officers work statewide, not only in Las Vegas and Reno but in rural communities including Elko, Fallon and Pahrump. Nevada Attorney General's Office of Military Legal Assistance. OMLA provides free civil legal help through volunteer attorneys. Active duty, reserve and National Guard service members can get assistance across a wide range of civil matters. Veterans can currently get help with wills and powers of attorney. VA health care in Nevada. The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System serves the Las Vegas area from the North Las Vegas VA Medical Center. Call 702-791-9000 or toll-free 888-633-7554. Nevada 211. Nevada 211 connects veterans and families to local services including benefit assistance, counseling, employment programs, housing and health care. Call 211 or 1-866-535-5654, text your ZIP code to 898211, or search https://www.nevada211.org/veteran-services/

Veterans Crisis Line. If you or a veteran you know is going through a hard time, free and confidential support is available 24 hours a day. Dial 988 then Press 1, text 838255, or chat at https://www.veteranscrisisline.net You do not need to be enrolled in VA health care to connect.
