The Stories of Honor series, created by Lee Montana Newspapers in partnership with AARP Montana, salutes the courage, sacrifice, and service of local veterans and active-duty military members—from World War II to recent conflicts.
The series features compelling profiles of bravery—such as pilots surviving combat, veterans transitioning to civilian life, and personal acts of sacrifice. Stories are published in Montana's major newspapers (including the Helena Independent Record, Montana Standard, Billings Gazette, and Missoulian) and online, running from Memorial Day through Veterans Day.

“We believe in honoring the sacrifices and stories of our veterans and active service members,” said Tim Summers, AARP Montana state director. “The ‘Stories of Honor’ series exemplifies AARP Montana’s commitment to amplifying their voices and experiences. We are proud to partner with Lee Montana Newspapers in this important initiative, which not only celebrates the bravery of those who have served but also fosters a deeper understanding of their contributions to our communities. This series is a testament to the power of storytelling in connecting us all.”
In 2025, the multimedia storytelling campaign received national recognition, earning a Gold NYX Award and a Communicator Award for Public Service Branded Content. These honors highlight the series' outstanding storytelling, design, and meaningful impact in honoring Montana's heroes.
“We are proud of the men and women across Montana who have served in the armed forces and are honored to continue sharing their stories through this partnership. Help us salute our heroes—nominate a veteran or active service member today,” concluded Summers.
Montana ranks high in veteran population: According to recent data from the Veterans Administration, roughly 1 in 13 Montanans has served, with more than 88,000 veterans and thousands more active, reserve, and civilian military members calling the state home.
