As you curl up with a book or tap out a quick text or email, take a moment to reflect on what a gift literacy truly is. Reading and writing open doors, spark imagination, and create opportunities. As a Literations volunteer, you can help pass that gift on.
Across many of our communities, nearly 70 percent of students are not reading at grade level. AARP Massachusetts believes every child deserves the chance to build strong reading skills, and that caring, committed volunteers can make a meaningful difference.
That is why AARP Massachusetts is proud to help spread the word about Literations, a trusted community partner and proud program partner of AARP Foundation Experience Corps. Together, we are working to strengthen communities by connecting older adults with opportunities to serve, lead, and support young learners.
Volunteering as a literacy coach is a powerful way to give back. You are not just helping a child learn to read. You are helping build confidence, curiosity, and a foundation for lifelong learning. And you are strengthening the community in the process.
Literations hosts series of information sessions for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer literacy coach. These sessions offer an introduction to the program and explain how volunteers can provide one‑on‑one and small‑group support to young readers in Boston, Chelsea, and Framingham schools and after‑school programs.
