Working to Keep Your Brain Sharp and Strong
Keeping your brain healthy with activities, proper nutrition and adequate sleep are some of the goals of AARP Maryland’s Brain Health Week, which runs Oct. 10 to 16.
The week’s events are designed “to meet people where they are and to encourage and build healthy habits and strengthen connections,” says Eleanor Nancarrow, AARP Maryland program specialist.

Some of the activities will be physical, such as pickleball, yoga and walking. Others will be intellectually focused with discussions about cognitive fitness. “We’re going to have creative experiences like art workshops and special tours at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore,” Nancarrow says.
In addition, the state office has resources online, including how to address hearing loss, find happiness during troubling times and deal with the emotional struggles of transitioning to retirement.
The activities were developed by AARP Maryland’s brain health team, which includes psychologists, nurses and social workers. The program emphasizes AARP’s Six Pillars of Brain Health:
- Be Social
- Engage Your Brain
- Manage Stress
- Exercise
- Get Quality Sleep
- Eat Healthy Food
The weeklong campaign kicks off in Columbia with AARP Maryland’s monthly “Walk with a Doc,” during which a physician speaks with participants about health and well-being before leading them on a walk around Lake Kittamaqundi near the Mall in Columbia. There’s no cost, and you don’t have to be over 50 or an AARP member to participate. Registration for individual events is suggested.
