Nominations Open for AARP Florida's 2026 Andrus Award for Community Service

Every community has someone whose dedication and generosity make life better for others. AARP Florida is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Andrus Award for Community Service, AARP's most prestigious volunteer honor. The award recognizes Floridians aged 50 and older who are making a lasting difference in their communities. 

Named after AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, the award reflects her lifelong commitment to service and her guiding motto: “To serve, not to be served.” As AARP's most prestigious volunteer recognition, the Andrus Award celebrates individuals whose compassion, leadership, and commitment inspire others and strengthen the communities they call home.

“AARP Florida is excited to shine a light on Floridians age 50 and older who are using their experience, talents, and time to make a meaningful difference in their communities, ,” said Jeff Johnson, AARP Florida State Director. 

Nominations will be evaluated by the AARP Florida State Office based on how the volunteer’s work has improved the community, reflected AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired others to serve. The application deadline is Sept. 30, 2026. The award recipient will be announced later in the fall.

AARP Florida Andrus Award for Community Service nominees must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

• Nominee must be 50 years or older.  
• The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must have been performed on a volunteer basis, without pay.  Volunteers receiving small stipends to cover the costs associated with the volunteer activity are eligible. 
• The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must reflect AARP’s vision and purpose. 
• The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must be replicable and provide inspiration for others to volunteer. 
• Partisan political achievements, accomplishments or service may not be considered. 
• Couples or partners who perform service together are also eligible; however, teams are not eligible. 
• Previous Andrus Award recipients are not eligible. 
• Volunteers serving on the Andrus Award selection committee are not eligible.  
• AARP staff members are not eligible. 
• This is not a posthumous award.
