Deerfield Beach and Pembroke Pines Recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with AARP Florida

The cities of Deerfield Beach and Pembroke Pines recognized World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with proclamations that underscored the importance of protecting older adults from abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Verel Johnson attended the Deerfield Beach presentation on behalf of AARP Florida, while Al Salvi represented AARP Florida at the Pembroke Pines proclamation. Their participation reflected AARP’s ongoing work to help older Floridians live with dignity, safety and confidence in their communities.

Observed annually on June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day brings communities together to raise awareness about the many forms elder abuse can take, including physical, emotional and financial abuse, as well as neglect and exploitation. The observance serves as a reminder that preventing elder abuse requires vigilance, education and strong community partnerships.

The proclamations were requested by Yessenia “Jess” Perez, Associate State Director of Outreach & Engagement for AARP Florida, who worked with the cities of Deerfield Beach and Pembroke Pines to recognize the day and help elevate elder abuse prevention as a local priority.

“AARP works to improve the lives of older adults and strengthen communities across Florida,” Perez wrote in the proclamation request. “This proclamation would help raise awareness about elder abuse prevention.”

The recognitions in Deerfield Beach and Pembroke Pines reflect a broader commitment to ensuring older adults and their families know how to identify warning signs, report concerns and connect with trusted resources. Elder abuse is often underreported, making public awareness efforts especially important for helping neighbors, caregivers, friends and family members speak up when something does not seem right.

Through education, outreach and fraud prevention resources, AARP Florida continues to support communities working to safeguard older residents. The Deerfield Beach and Pembroke Pines proclamations are another step toward building awareness, encouraging action and affirming that everyone has a role to play in protecting older adults.
