Delaware Voters Age 50-Plus Continue to Shape Election Outcomes

Delaware voters age 50-plus remain the most influential voting bloc in the state, underscoring the importance of ensuring older residents have access to trusted, nonpartisan election information and opportunities to make their voices heard. With the mid-term elections approaching, AARP believes it is more important than ever to learn the candidates’ views on issues that matter the most to older voters, including Social Security, supporting family caregivers and retirement security.

Here in Delaware, voters age 50-plus accounted for 61.3% of all voters in Delaware's 2024 general election, representing approximately 312,000 voters. Voters age 65 and older made up 34.8% of the electorate, while voters ages 50-64 represented another 26.5%. Together, voters over 50 made up a clear majority of Delaware's electorate and played a decisive role in election outcomes.

"As elected officials consider the future of programs and services that matter to older Americans, Delawareans age 50-plus continue to show up and make their voices heard at the ballot box," said Lucretia Young, AARP Delaware State Director. "Older voters understand what is at stake. They care deeply about protecting Social Security, supporting family caregivers and ensuring financial security for themselves and future generations. Their participation helps shape the decisions made in Dover and Washington."

The importance of older voters extends beyond presidential election years. Nationally, voters age 50-plus are the most reliable voting group and typically make up an even larger share of the electorate in midterm elections. AARP is focused on empowering voters with trusted information so they can make informed decisions and engage in the democratic process.

As prices for everyday essentials such as housing, utilities and health care continue to rise, many Delaware residents are looking to elected officials for solutions that protect retirement security and support family caregivers. The members of Congress elected in upcoming elections will play a critical role in decisions affecting Social Security and resources for family caregivers.
