Why does family caregiving matter in Alaska?
Family caregivers are the backbone of Alaska’s care system. More than one in five adults in Alaska are family caregivers, providing an estimated 90 million hours of care each year. In 2024, that care was valued at $2 billion. Alaska has one of the fastest-growing per-capita senior populations in the nation, so the need for caregivers is likely to keep growing.
While caregiving can be meaningful and rewarding, it can also bring financial and emotional challenges. More than half of family caregivers provide high-intensity care, and 33% provide at least 40 hours of care a week or constant care. At the same time, 49% have experienced at least one negative financial impact, 36% report moderate to high emotional stress, and 34% care for an adult while also raising a child at home.*
*The detailed caregiver characteristics are estimates for the U.S. Census Bureau’s Pacific Division, which includes Alaska, California, Hawai‘i, Oregon, and Washington.

What is AARP Alaska doing to advocate for issues impacting family caregivers?
AARP Alaska advocates in the State Legislature for policies that save family caregivers time and money and strengthen the care workforce they rely on. During the 2026 legislative session, AARP Alaska supported HB 244, which increases dementia care training requirements for certified nursing assistants which supports family caregivers, quality care and a stronger caregiving workforce, and HB 110, which joins Alaska to interstate health care licensure compacts to expand access to care amid workforce shortages. AARP Alaska also backed operating budget investments in senior community grants for senior centers, adult day services, and higher Medicaid payment rates for direct support professionals and personal care attendants, all of which help older Alaskans age in their homes. Read about all of AARP Alaska’s 2026 legislative successes here.
At the federal level, AARP supports the Credit for Caring Act, a proposed federal tax credit for hardworking family caregivers, and the Lowering Costs for Caregivers Act, which would expand how caregivers can use flexible spending and health savings accounts.
