Gaming Research: Perceptions of the Impact of Playing Board Games

Playful activities such as board games can help create meaningful social connections in one's life. AARP Research recently explored how older adults and grandparents perceive board gaming and its benefits.

Top Findings

  • Roughly one-third of older adults feel lonely or isolated from those around them, higher among those who are not grandparents.
  • Most older adults see a connection between play and health and believe social connections are a benefit of playing board games.
  • A majority of grandparents play board games with their grandchildren, and almost half of grandparents agree that playing board games helps them connect with their grandkids.

Methodology

These surveys were administered online and via telephone to a nationally representative sample of 2,249 adults ages 50 and older in June 2023 and July 2023 via the Foresight 50+ Consumer Omnibus Survey..
