Question 1 of 8

According to Northwestern Mutual’s latest “Progress & Planning Study” surveying Americans’ views on their long-term financial security, how much money do U.S. adults believe they’ll need to save to live comfortably throughout their retirement years?

The $1.46 million retirement “magic number,” as the financial services firm’s April 2024 report terms it, is 15 percent higher than it was a year ago and has grown a whopping 53 percent since 2020, when the average amount retirement savers said they would need was $951,000.

Question 2 of 8

Scammers have grown more sophisticated, in part due to AI advances and availability, and they’re likely to use this year’s elections to target your data and cash. What is a common election scam?

Every type of election scam is dangerous, but one expert is especially troubled by robocalls. “The one genre of misinformation I’m most worried about for the election is fake audio,” says Dan Evon, senior manager of education design for the News Literacy Project.

In videos, visual cues can help indicate a fake, such as speeches in which the words don’t match the candidates’ mouths. During a robocall, “there’s not as many obvious red flags to indicate whether something is false,” Evon says.

Question 3 of 8

More than 10 million Americans with Medicare received a free vaccine in 2023 under a prescription drug law passed in 2022 that eliminates cost sharing for certain vaccines covered under Part D.

Which vaccine is covered under Part D?

“High out-of-pocket costs prevented far too many older Americans from getting recommended vaccines,” says Leigh Purvis, prescription drug policy principal in AARP’s Public Policy Institute. “The new prescription drug law removes this obstacle and will help protect the health of millions of Medicare beneficiaries.”

Question 4 of 8

If you are getting ready to travel, you probably have a checklist you follow. TSA PreCheck? Active. Passport? Check. But do you have your International Driving Permit? Which countries require you to have one before you cruise their streets?

“The process to get [an International Driving Permit] is actually really simple,” says William Lee, the head of marketing for Chima Travel in northeast Ohio. Before you travel, visit AAA either in person or online. AAA is the only entity that issues the permit in the U.S. Supply two passport-style photos or have the pictures taken at certain AAA offices. The fee for the permit is $20, plus processing and delivery fees. You don’t need to be a member of AAA to use this service.

Question 5 of 8

Nobel laureate Alice Munro, the Canadian literary giant who became one of the world’s most esteemed contemporary authors and one of history’s most honored short story writers, died this week at age 92.

Which of the following is NOT a book Munro wrote:

Often ranked with Anton Chekhov, John Cheever and a handful of other short story writers, Munro achieved a stature rare for an art form traditionally placed beneath the novel. She was the first lifelong Canadian to win the Nobel and the first recipient cited exclusively for short fiction.

Echoing the judgment of so many before, the Swedish academy pronounced her a “master of the contemporary short story” who could “accommodate the entire epic complexity of the novel in just a few short pages.”

Question 6 of 8

In 2022, Lyme disease diagnoses among the 65-plus population were more than double what they were in previous years, according to a 2024 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A change in how Lyme disease cases are reported helps explain this increase; shifting climate patterns, suburban development and a greater awareness among the public also contribute to rising numbers.

What is an early warning sign of Lyme disease?

Missing or misdiagnosing Lyme disease in the early stages is common, health experts say. If you live in an area where Lyme disease is common and you’ve been feeling unwell, it’s reasonable to ask your doctor for a test.

The CDC recommends a two-step testing process, and both tests can use the same blood sample. If your doctor suspects Lyme disease or you get a positive test, you’ll be prescribed antibiotics to treat it.

Question 7 of 8

The time and money needed to provide transportation can be a challenge as caregivers juggle jobs and help their loved ones. AARP estimated that in 2021, the most recent year for which the information was available, caregivers spent an average of $7,242 in annual out-of-pocket costs on top of a total $600 billion in unpaid labor.

True or false: Ride-hailing apps such as Lyft and Uber are working to support caregivers in need of transportation services.

Uber this week announced an initiative called Uber Caregiver that it plans to start this summer. Caregivers will be able to use a new three-way chat in Uber’s mobile app that will connect them to drivers and notify them when care recipients communicate in the app with drivers. Lyft works with businesses across the country, mostly health care providers, that request, schedule and pay for rides on behalf of patients through the Lyft Concierge program. The need could be for something as regular as kidney dialysis or as occasional as an annual checkup.
