Overview: What to Do After a Scam

If you experience fraud, acting quickly can help limit financial losses and reduce the risk of identity theft. But many victims aren’t sure what to do next — and once someone has been targeted successfully, they may be more vulnerable to additional scams.

The first steps can make a big difference: They include cutting off contact with the criminal, alerting your financial institutions, freezing your credit and reporting the crime to the appropriate authorities.

In this series, we’ll walk you through those steps to protect yourself from further theft and identity fraud, and explain where to find support.
