In February 2024, Habitat for Humanity of Evansville handed house keys to two older siblings — Jack, who has disabilities, and his sister and caregiver Louise — enabling the pair to safely and independently reside together.
AARP Indiana helped make the house friendly for aging-in-place by introducing universal design concepts such as sturdy yet attractive grab-bars in the bathrooom, wide hallways, and a zero-step access into and out of the house. AARP volunteers provided hands-on help with some of the construction tasks.
Before receiving the keys to the home, Louise completed nearly 500 hours of what Habitat for Humanity calls "sweat equity" by volunteering on home-building projects for others in the community.
Advocates from both organizations are working with local leaders and state legislators to expand the availability of affordable and accessible homes for all Indiana residents.
