Accessory dwelling units — commonly referred to as ADUs and known in Tucson, Arizona, as casitas — have been allowed in the city since January 2022, when it became legal for owners of a single-family residence to create a smaller, secondary dwelling on their property. The 2023 design competition chose winning entries from more than 60 design submissions. The hope is that the resulting library of pre-approved designs will help expand housing options in Tucson by streamlining the design, permitting and construction process.
