Costco Chicken Faces Recall

Approximately 148,000 pounds of fully cooked chicken affected

Foster Farms recalled approximately 148,000 pounds of fully cooked chicken patties sold at Costco that may be contaminated with hard pieces of plastic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced.

The chicken was shipped to Costco distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah and Washington. However, it may have later been distributed to stores in additional states.

The recalled products were sold in 80-ounce plastic bags containing 20 patties. They are labeled “Chicken Patties Breaded Chicken Patties with Rib Meat” and have a “best by” date of Aug. 11, 2023, establishment number P-33901, the lot code 3*2223** printed on the back edge of the package, and the number 7527899724 listed under the barcode.

The problem was discovered after consumers complained about finding hard clear plastic embedded in the fully cooked chicken products. Although there have been no reports of injury associated with eating the chicken patties, the USDA is concerned the pieces of plastic could be sharp and cause injuries.

Anyone who purchased the recalled chicken should throw it out or return it to the place of purchase.

“Foster Farms is committed to producing safe and wholesome products that adhere to the highest quality expectations. We take incidents of this nature very seriously and are committed to preventing a reoccurrence,” said Robert O’ Connor, the company’s vice president of technical services, in a statement issued by Costco. “The plant management team has thoroughly investigated and established robust corrective and preventative measures.”
