Forty years ago this month, Whitney Houston — a.k.a. “The Voice” — had her pop-music coming-out party at the tender age of 21. Her self-titled debut album, released on Valentine’s Day 1985, eventually sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and launched one of the greatest voices in the history of American music. Houston was nominated for 25 Grammys, winning six, and sold more than 200 million albums, singles and videos during her storied career, which was tragically cut short when she died in February 2012.

After seeing her perform "Tomorrow" from the musical Annie at a club in New York City, Clive Davis, 92, signed Whitney Houston to Arista Records in April 1983. She was just 19 years old.
