Fall clothes are flooding retail sites, and everyone’s browsing. From Old Navy to Kohl’s, Nordstrom to J.Crew, Banana Republic to Target, virtual carts are loading up. It’s a seasonal tradition, but here’s the funny thing. When it comes time to “check out,” shoppers hesitate. They say, “What was I thinking? I live in tees and joggers!” “I don’t even like burgundy!” Or “C’mon, when will I wear a leather pencil skirt?”
As a beauty/fashion editor and personal shopper for women over 50, I’ve found that more women are looking for a fashionable “tweak” to the clothes already sitting in their closets, not an all-out shopping spree. You too? Here are six easy ways to give the clothes you love a fresh twist.
1. Keep your dark neutrals, add lighter ones
Most women make dark neutrals like black and navy (or, more recently, brown) the meat and potatoes of their cold-weather wardrobe. They’re classy, visually slimming and easy to find anywhere, at every price. But let’s be realistic. A steady diet of dark clothes for months on end can be boring and kind of draining to mature skin in winter. This fall, white, ivory, cream, taupe, camel and beige are brightening the lineup. Keep your dark neutrals (and their benefits) going, but bring in light neutrals in tops or bottoms, whichever your preference.
Try pairing light-colored neutral sweaters and pullovers, like the Gap Women CashSoft Tie-Neck Sweater in Cobblestone Beige ($80, gap.com); the L.L.Bean Women’s CloudSoft Top, Funnelneck in Cream Heather ($90, llbean.com); or By Anthropologie Eloisa Relaxed Dolman Sweater in Taupe ($138, anthropologie.com), with dark pants and skirts and inky jeans to give your skin a glow and emphasize your upper body. Or pair light-colored neutral bottoms, like the J.Jill Wearever Polished-Knit Wide-Leg Trousers in Cream ($99, jjill.com); Loft Wide-Leg Corduroy Pants in Whisper White ($36, loft.com); or Universal Thread Women’s High-Rise Easy Barrel-Leg Jeans in Beige ($30, target.com), with your dark tops to focus attention below the waist, highlighting your curves or a new workout ethic. You choose.
2. Keep your breezy boho favorites, add cold-weather dupes
Some women say their favorite clothes are the oversized linen and gauze button-downs and tiered skirts they live in for summer. Keep your style and those pieces going by adding similar ones in toastier fabrics and autumnal hues. Then mix and match and supplement the pairings with your sweaters and boots. For example, add generously-cut button-downs in cotton blends and corduroy, like the L.L.Bean Women’s Unwashed Textured Big Shirt in Deep Lake Check, Dark Cinder Check or Faded Sage Check ($70, llbean.com); the Old Navy Women Oversized Boyfriend Button-Down Corduroy Shirt in Dried Linen, Volcanic Glass and Reddy or Not ($27, oldnavy.gap.com); or the Banana Republic Factory Women Relaxed Corduroy Shirt in Transition Cream, Mocha Latte or Preppy Navy ($43, bananarepublicfactory.gapfactory.com). All make roomy toppers for jeans, leggings and pants.
Winterize the tiered skirts you love with one or two in longer lengths and darker colors, like the Lysse Women Sabrina Ponte Pleated Midi Skirt in Smoke Green Plaid ($119, bloomingdales.com); the Old Navy x Altuzarra Tiered Swing Maxi Skirt in Black Jack ($60, oldnavy.gap.com); the Universal Thread High-Rise Elastic Drawstring Tiered Skirt in Brown or Black ($38, target.com); or the Donna Karan New York Satin Tiered Midi Skirt in Black or Sage ($169, nordstrom.com).
3. Keep your jeans, change your tees
One very affordable item can update all your jeans and pull-on pants: a new tee — with one significant change. Until now, cold weather meant a shift to long sleeves and covered-up crewnecks. Well, boatneck and V-neck tops are no longer just a warm-weather look. Stock up on styles like the Universal Thread Women’s Long-Sleeve Heirloom Boat Neck T-Shirt in Charcoal, Brown or Cream ($20, target.com); the L.L.Bean Women’s Pima Cotton Tee, Long-Sleeve Open V-Neck in Toasted Coconut Heather, Deepest Brown, Fig or Shadow Green ($37, llbean.com); and the Gap Women Modern Boatneck T-Shirt in Black, Navy Blue, Terra Brown and Fresh White ($40, gap.com) for continued flattery. You’ll get a longer-looking neck and torso, a lift or separation for the bust and balanced proportions, top and bottom.
There’s another game-changing neckline to consider. Henleys that unbutton to a V offer all the same benefits. Check out the Old Navy Women Long-Sleeve Crew-Neck Henley T-Shirt in Mushroom, Black Coffee, Gothic Blue or Sea Salt ($33, oldnavy.gap.com); the Farmer’s Market Women’s Waffle Long-Sleeve Top in Ice Blue or Dusty Rose ($24, kohls.com); and the Banana Republic Factory Women Henley T-Shirt in Dark Olive, White or Preppy Navy ($23, bananarepublicfactory.gapfactory.com).
4. Keep your sporty wardrobe, add some elevated pieces
No matter how hard designers try to lure mature consumers away from leggings, joggers, sweats and sneakers with “real clothes,” it’s not happening. The idea of lifestyle clothes that look cool, layer up or down and have a sporty vibe has led many women to make athleisure-dressing a habit. How do you give that look a refresh? Keep your favorites on rotation, but include a couple of fashion-forward pieces.
You might add tops with a V-neck collar or funnel neckline, like the Banana Republic Factory Women Fleece Collared Sweatshirt in Snow Day, Black or Mocha Latte ($36, bananarepublicfactory.gapfactory.com); the L.L.Bean Women’s Quilted Half-Snap Sweatshirt in Khaki Heather or Classic Navy ($90, llbean.com); and the KBB by Kahlana Women’s Funnel Sweatshirt in Camel ($45, target.com), to your usual crews and hoodies.
Or you can add a pair of almost-tailored, wide-leg sweatpants, like the Lands’ End Women’s Sport Knit High-Rise Pants in French Pecan Heather, Forest Moss and Rich Camel ($60, landsend.com); the Old Navy Women High-Waisted Bounce Fleece Trouser Sweatpants in Black Jack, Oatmeal Heather or Heartwood ($15, oldnavy.gap.com); and the Gap Factory Women Pull-On Barrel Sweatpants in Frosty Morning, Deep Sailor Blue and Tweed Green ($30, gapfactory.com), to your usual rotation of joggers and leggings. And while you can always opt for black, you might add the additional pieces in newish neutrals, like brown, olive green, camel or ivory, to boost the update’s impact.
5. Keep your clothes, change your bag and shoes
Sometimes just adding a new bag and shoes is enough to dial up last year’s clothes and bump up the look of every outfit. The truth is, people notice your bag and shoes first and last, even before your outfit. And let’s not forget that your bag or shoes are the things that are most guaranteed to get an “I love your…” compliment.
Right now, a slouchy suede shoulder bag in a new-for-you-neutral and animal-print flats are all you need. In goes-with-everything neutrals, you’ll never have to think twice. Look for suede shoulder bags like The Sak Huntley Hobo Bag in Moss Suede, Mushroom Suede or Tan Suede Whimsy Floral ($159, nordstrom.com); the Banana Republic Factory Women Vegan Suede Mixed-Media Medium Slouchy Tote in Dark Olive, Black or Chocolate Brown ($52, bananarepublicfactory.gapfactory.com); and the Quince Esme Suede Shoulderbag in Pebble, Chocolate Brown or Midnight ($134, quince.com). All are deceptively light yet sturdy, with an inside zipper, slot compartments and magnetic closures.

Give your bottom line a boost with leopard flats. Updated styles like the Lands’ End Women’s Essential Leopard Ballet Flats in Leopard/ Brown ($60, landsend.com);
Aerosoles Women’s Bell Ballet Flat in Leopard Print ($60, dsw.com); the Tommy Hilfiger Women’s Bekim Ballet Flats in Light Brown Leopard Multi ($79, zappos.com); and Rothy’s The ReVelvet Max Square-Toe Ballet Flat in ReVelvet Spotted Cat ($155, nordstrom.com) have comfy insoles and toe boxes that protect mature arches, plus ample space for sensitive toes.
6. Keep your tailored, classic clothes and relax the blazer
Plenty of women over 50 still prefer classic clothes. Not stuffy, traditional looks, but modern classics like button-downs and polo-collared tops, straight-leg ankle pants and crewneck or turtleneck sweaters. And the star is always a tailored blazer. If you’re a classic dresser, I bet you count on these notch-collar jackets to add coverage, structure or last-minute flair to any outfit. There’s an easy way to update all your basics this fall, and it doesn’t mean changing a thing. Just add a knit blazer to the lineup to give these refined clothes a “lifestyle” attitude, rather than one that says “I’m wearing my leftover office clothes.”
Keep your pulled-together look, but add a knit, ponte or sweater, blazer, like Croft & Barrow Women’s Swing Sweater Blazer in Mushroom Heather, Dark Ink Heather, Genuine Navy or MineralBlack ($35, kohls.com); Chico’s Double-Breasted Sweater Blazer in Passport Blue, Harvest Purple, Mossy Grove ($120, chicos.com); the J.Jill Wearever Double-Breasted Sweater Blazer in Navy Blue or Black ($129, jjill.com); or the Everlane Women Collarless Ponte Blazer in Heather Soot ($125, everlane.com), for an instant upgrade.
