Set Out on Our ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ Quiz Quest

For the film’s 50th birthday, see what you recall about this hilariously absurd take on King Arthur

Fifty years ago this month, Monty Python and the Holy Grail made its big-screen debut in the U.S. — and took the legend of King Arthur to the heights of inspired silliness.

The delightfully absurd English comedy troupe known as Monty Python — Graham Chapman, John Cleese, 85, Terry Gilliam, 84 (the group’s lone American), Eric Idle, 82, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, 81 — formed in 1969 and found success in their sketch show Monty Python’s Flying Circus and multiple films, including Monty Python and the Holy Grail in 1975.

It initially gained popularity as a cult film on the midnight movie circuit, and today it's widely hailed as one of the greatest comedies ever made. In 2021, AARP named it one of the funniest movies of the last 50 years and one of 30 movies every grownup should know, and it frequently appears on other cinematic all-time-best lists.

How much do you remember about this epic medieval romp? Take our quiz and see if you’re worthy enough to lift the Grail.

Question 1 of 10

What tropical fruit was memorably used to mimic horse-clomping sounds throughout the movie?

While the coconuts were comically brilliant, they were also financially necessary: The production couldn’t afford to use real horses. “Necessity is the mother of invention,” Cleese said about the coconuts during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers in 2018. Fun fact: At Monty Python and the Holy Grail’s initial American screening in New York, the first 1,000 guests received a coconut.

Question 2 of 10

What does the peasant Dennis say when King Arthur explains that he became king of the Britons after the Lady of the Lake gave him the sword Excalibur?

a scene from the movie

King Arthur (Chapman) encounters a very chatty Dennis (Palin) working in the fields outside a castle. When Arthur informs Dennis and his companion (Jones) that he is king of the Britons, they express doubt that Arthur is their ruler. They also claim that they’re members of an “autonomous collective” and an “anarcho-syndicalist commune.”

Question 3 of 10

What does the Black Knight say while fighting King Arthur?

The Black Knight (Cleese) is the epitome of mindless bravery. He fights until he’s lost all his arms and legs, denies his appalling injuries (“Tis but a scratch ... I’ve had worse ... just a flesh wound”) and taunts King Arthur as he coconut-clops away (“Come back here and take what’s coming to you. I’ll bite your legs off!”).

Question 4 of 10

When a mob of peasants wants to burn a witch at the stake, one man in the crowd claims that the witch transformed him into a creature. What was it?

When wise Sir Bedevere (Jones) asks the mob what the witch (Connie Booth, 84) had done, one peasant (Cleese) angrily yells, “She turned me into a newt!” — then meekly adds as an aside, “I got better.” Fun fact: Booth and Cleese were married from 1968 to 1978.

Question 5 of 10

King Arthur and the knights use a variation of the Trojan horse surprise attack to try to enter the castle controlled by the French knights. Which animal did they use?

The king and the knights fooled the French into wheeling a giant rabbit into the castle. However, Arthur and his brethren forgot to actually get inside the rabbit, rendering their attack plans moot. Bedevere then suggests that they build “a large wooden badger” to trick the French.

Question 6 of 10

What does Brave Sir Robin do when he encounters the Three-Headed Giant?

When the Three-Headed Giant threatens to kill him “and then have tea and biscuits,” Sir Robin (Idle) turns and runs away. The details of his retreat are then mockingly sung to him by his minstrel (frequent Python collaborator Neil Innes): “Brave Sir Robin ran away / Bravely ran away away / When danger reared its ugly head / He bravely turned his tail and fled.” Fun fact: During the film’s battle scenes, King Arthur also uses “Run away” as his command to retreat.

Question 7 of 10

What do the Knights Who Say “Ni!” demand from King Arthur and his knights to allow them to pass through the forest?

The head knight orders them to seek and return with a shrubbery “or else you will never pass through this wood alive!” (The head knight also stipulates that the shrubbery should be “one that looks nice” and is “not too expensive.”) Later, the Knights Who Say “Ni!” order Arthur and company to get a second shrubbery. “Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get the two-level effect with a little path running down the middle,” the head knight says.

Question 8 of 10

What is the name of the enchanter whom King Arthur and his knights encounter during their quest?

Tim the Enchanter (Cleese) warns Arthur and his men about the beast that guards the cave of Caerbannog. Tim says it is “a creature so foul, so cruel, that no man yet has fought with it and lived!” (Spoiler alert: It’s a little white rabbit.)

Question 9 of 10

What do King Arthur and his knights use to blow up the small but vicious rabbit guarding the cave of Caerbannog?

The Holy Hand Grenade is described as a “sacred relic” and resembles the Sovereign’s Orb that is part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. However, nobody knows how it works, so King Arthur and his men must consult the Book of Armaments (chapter 2, verses 9 to 21) to figure out how to use it.

Question 10 of 10

What is one of the three questions that the Bridgekeeper asks to try to block King Arthur from crossing the Bridge of Death?

a scene from the movie

When Arthur tries to get some clarity from the Bridgekeeper (Gilliam) about whether it’s “an African or European swallow,” the Bridgekeeper, unable to answer, flies off the bridge into the Gorge of Eternal Peril, allowing the quest for the grail to continue. (Swallows are a running gag throughout the movie.)
