The La La Land cast, crew and filmmakers took the stage to accept the award, and were then informed that a mistake had been made and Moonlight was the actual winner.

South Korea’s Parasite became the first movie to win both best international feature film — a new name for the category beginning that year — and best picture.

Will Smith took offense at Rock’s joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia. Smith publicly apologized the following day and then resigned from the Academy, but was banned from the telecast and Academy-related functions for 10 years.
