Question 1 of 7

According to a survey from AARP and S&P Global of 1,200 caregivers who work full-time or part-time, what share say they have some difficulty balancing work and life responsibilities?

Two-thirds (67 percent) reported having at least some difficulty balancing work and life responsibilities. Fully 84 percent of respondents said that caregiving had a moderate or high impact on the stress they feel daily.

Question 2 of 7

What is the best way employers can help caregivers be more successful both at work and at home, according to the AARP and S&P Global report?

Workplace “[c]ulture is the biggest enabler and hurdle to creating a supportive environment for family caregivers,” one expert says. To change that workplace culture, working caregivers need to be more open about their needs.

Question 3 of 7

One way to lessen burnout on the job is to take a break. While vacations are ideal, “microbreaks” help, too. How short can a microbreak be?

Researchers found that microbreaks of as little as 10 minutes can help reduce fatigue, but only if you use them to do something less taxing than what you already were doing, according to one study. Microbreaks “make individuals feel more vigorous and less fatigued and stimulate them to feel more productive after the break,” the study says.

Question 4 of 7

True or false: The lower your boundaries at work are, the higher your burnout is going to be.

It’s not always easy — or possible — to say no at work, but with a bit of examination, you may find that you have more control over your daily tasks than you think. “Burnout and boundaries go hand-in-hand,” one expert says. If your workload is overwhelming, consider speaking to your manager about how to prioritize what you’re being asked to do as one way to alleviate some of the pressure.

Question 5 of 7

Good nutrition can help you have more energy at home and on the job. One study found that among 630 Finnish women workers, those who ate healthier diets were less likely to feel burnout at work. What protein was a staple of their diet?

Even when you know a balanced diet is essential for your wellness, it’s easy to let it slip when work keeps you busy. Taking care of the things most people know we should—but fail—to do is important. All these things can help you better deal with stressors that can contribute to burnout and poor work-life balance.

Question 6 of 7

According to one AARP survey, 36 percent of remote workers 50 and older said being isolated from coworkers is difficult. What’s one easy way remote workers can socialize with their colleagues?

It’s important to be more actively involved in cultivating relationships that may have happened more easily when everyone worked at the same place at the same time.

One team has found a way to make connections a little easier from afar. “We also keep a running weekly virtual fun meeting where we get on camera and spend time talking about anything other than work,” one expert says.

Question 7 of 7

True or false: According to one survey, 70 percent of people said that their primary sense of purpose is defined by their work.

“Individuals with a connection to purpose in the workplace feel more fulfilled, are more engaged, more productive and report more fulfilling work relationships,” one expert says. If you’re working, find ways to reconnect with your job’s inherent value, or consider looking for an employer whose mission you support.
