How Much Do You Know About Labor Day?

The creation of Labor Day as a federal holiday was one of the achievements of the labor movement of the late 1800s.

While the federal holiday wasn’t created until 12 years later, the first Labor Day parade happened Sept. 5, 1882, in New York, New York. An estimated 10,000 people took unpaid time off from work to march to City Hall.

The deadly riots that resulted from this conflict were one reason why Congress created Labor Day as an olive branch to workers’ rights activists and protesters.

“White can be worn 365 days a year,” according to the institute, which specializes in etiquette issues. “The old rule about only wearing white between Memorial Day and Labor Day is a thing of the past.”

According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans eat more than 150 million hot dogs on just the Fourth of July.

L.A. residents ate more than 27.5 million pounds of hot dogs. New York City came in second, and Dallas took third place.
