25 Great Ways to Upgrade Your Vacation for Less

Small enhancements can make a trip feel even more special

Even if you are traveling on a limited budget, there are many ways to upgrade your vacation without spending a bundle.

Small upgrades, chosen wisely, can make a trip feel more special. According to AARP’s most recent travel trends report, the cost of travel was the leading barrier to travel for individuals over 50. Cost is also the main reason some people 50-plus took fewer trips the previous year. Yet, many frequent travelers know how to stretch their travel budget to get the most out of their trips.

Here are 25 great ways to treat yourself while on vacation that won’t cost a ton.

1. Use an airport lounge

Airport lounges can make travel days more enjoyable. “Although there is a modest payment to access a lounge, the cost often covers comfortable seats, food, drinks and internet,” says Joe Cronin, president of International Citizens Insurance. This can help offset the cost of entry if you are planning on buying a meal or drinks at the airport. There are various ways to access airport lounges. Options include paying a one-time fee for a day pass, purchasing a Priority Pass membership that includes access to over 1,000 lounges, using a credit card that provides lounge access or booking an airline ticket that includes access.

2. Bookend your core stay with low-cost lodging

While switching hotels may seem like a pain, it can be a great way to upgrade your vacation without spending a bundle. To make the most of your trip, and stretch your budget a little further, stay at a less-expensive hotel the night before you check in at your main destination and the night you check out. This works especially well if you are visiting a resort. Since many resorts allow you to use their amenities for the entire day when you check in and check out, you can add two full days to your stay without paying for extra nights at an expensive property. It’s also a good approach if you are paying a premium to stay in a desirable location, especially if you are arriving late at night or leaving early in the morning.

3. Use a hotel lounge

Some hotels have lounges select guests can use. Like airport lounges, many hotel lounges are a comfortable space to work or socialize. Many also provide complimentary food and drinks. There are various ways to access hotel lounges, including getting elite status with a hotel or booking a room that includes lounge access. Hyatt, for example, offers access to its Regency Club Lounge with breakfast and all-day beverages. Guests who book certain suites gain access to the lounge.

4. Get creative with your use of points and miles

Using points and miles to buy airline tickets, book hotels and go on excursions can greatly reduce the cost of travel. You can earn points and miles by putting everyday expenses on select credit cards, using shopping portals or through hotel stays and flights. To get the most value out of your points and miles, transfer them to a partner rather than booking through a travel portal. For example, you will probably get more value out of Chase Ultimate Rewards points by transferring points to United Airlines and booking through United directly. To earn as many points as possible, use your credit cards strategically. If you have a credit card that earns additional points for groceries, be sure to use that card whenever you go to the grocery store.

5. Get a day pass to a resort

Instead of paying top-tier rates to stay at a resort or hotel with luxury amenities, consider staying at a less expensive hotel and getting a day pass. Sites like ResortPass, Daycation or Dayaxe provide daily access to hotels and resorts, often at a fraction of the cost of staying on-site.

6. Ask about a hotel room upgrade

Sometimes, asking for an upgrade of your hotel room is all it takes to get a nicer room. “I’ll often call a hotel a day or two before arriving and inquire about a last-minute upgrade. Hotels are often willing to give a room upgrade for a little cheaper at the last minute,” says Daniel Herszberg, co-founder of Travel Insighter, who operates Fiery Hearts Tours. If you are celebrating a special occasion, such as an anniversary, retirement or birthday, getting an upgrade may be as easy as emailing the hotel in advance and letting them know an upgrade would help make your stay more memorable. Even if an upgrade isn’t available immediately, let the front desk know you are open to an upgrade later in your stay if one becomes available.

7. Get TSA PreCheck, Clear and Global Entry

In the U.S., TSA PreCheck, Clear and Global Entry can help travelers speed through security, customs and immigration, leaving more time for your vacation. Plus, travelers who have TSA PreCheck can leave their shoes on when going through security, which can be helpful for those with mobility issues. Although there is a fee to enroll in each of these services, access can save time and aggravation. Even better, some credit cards, like Capital One Venture Card, certain American Express cards and Navy Federal’s Visa Signature Flagship Rewards Card, will cover the cost of enrollment fees. Outside of the U.S., some airports, like Heathrow in London and Dubai International Airport, have programs that help travelers speed through immigration and security for a fee. “Given how many flights are timed for early-morning departure slots, this often results in some very valuable extra sleep,” Herszberg says.

8. Use Mobile Passport Control

If you don’t want to pay for Global Entry or don’t travel enough to justify the cost, consider using Mobile Passport Control. This free app allows eligible travelers to breeze through immigration when returning to the U.S. Users upload a photo of their travel documents and answer several questions before reaching passport control. Many airports have a dedicated line for Mobile Passport Control users.

9. Prebook airport pick-up services

After a long day of travel, it can be frustrating to figure out how to get from the airport to your hotel. “One of my biggest annoyances is arriving in a new city and having to haggle with taxi drivers in a foreign language about a foreign currency,” Herszberg says. A premium transfer service usually costs under $100 and “can make the beginning and end of your trip feel much more special,” says Jesse Neugarten, CEO and founder of Dollar Flight Club,  a subscription-based service that alerts members when prices for flights drop. The process of booking an airport transfer varies by location. Services like Daytrip, Uber and Super Shuttle can pick passengers up from many airports.

10. Use small items to make travel more comfortable

Small items purchased before traveling, such as an eye mask to block out light and noise-canceling earplugs, can help improve your sleep no matter where you are. Wearing fuzzy socks or comfortable slippers on long flights and using a quality travel pillow on flights can help make travel more comfortable.

11. Dig deep to see what your airline and hotel loyalty programs offer

It’s free to join most airline and hotel loyalty programs. Members of loyalty programs can rack up points toward free stays. They also can earn perks such as seats with more legroom, free breakfast, room upgrades, late checkout and upgraded Wi-Fi. Be sure to research what perks you may be missing out on.

12. Book meet-and-greet services

Many airports offer meet-and-greet services that provide luggage assistance, an escort through the airport or access to a private lounge. Services vary by location and package. SkyVIP, Airport Assist, Marhaba and Pearl offer meet-and-greet services at different price points in airports around the world.

13. Try a home swap

Instead of staying in a hotel, consider a home swap. For a small fee, travelers can switch homes with like-minded tourists. Kindred, HomeExchange and People Like Us each vet members before they can start swapping. If you aren’t comfortable with someone staying in your home, consider pet sitting. As a pet sitter, you may be able to stay in someone’s home in exchange for walking their dog or feeding their cat while they are away.

14. Add a day or two to your trip

Adding a day or two to your trip is an easy, low-cost way to make your trip better, says Jeremy Clubb, founder and director of Rainforest Cruises and Antarctica Cruises. By adding even one extra day to your trip, you can create more leisurely days by spreading out your activities, adding a rest day to your itinerary or visiting a far-flung location. Consider a less expensive hotel to help offset the costs of extra nights.

15. Bid to upgrade airplane seats

Even if a business-class ticket is out of your budget, you may still be able to get a seat with extra legroom. Several airlines allow economy passengers to bid on higher-class seats that haven’t been sold. By bidding on higher-tier airplane seats, savvy travelers may be able to fly in the front of the plane for less. Airlines that don’t offer bidding may offer upgrades shortly before flight time for a fixed price in cash or miles if seats are available.

16. Eat like a local

You don’t need to dine in fine restaurants to have a great trip. “Embrace the local cuisine and eat fresh,” says Ariel Barrionuevo, managing director of La Coralina Island House, a boutique hotel in Bocas del Toro, Panama. “Locally sourced meals offer a unique, authentic taste of the area, and it’s often a more affordable option than dining at international restaurants,” he says. Eric Newman, owner of Iceland Step by Step, recommends buying some meals at the grocery store. “Especially if you’re in another country, this can be a fantastic cultural experience as well as a way to save money,” he says.

17. Use apps for free guided tours

Download an app and take a self-guided tour of a new place. “These apps provide tourists with free walking tours, insider tips and even deals with restaurants and attractions that enable visitors to explore while spending less money,” Cronin says. Apps such as Rick Steves Audio Europe, GPSmyCity, MuseMuse and Guide To Go are all good options.

18. Look for local events or pop-up experiences

Instead of sticking to the main tourist attractions, look for local events. “One of my favorite ways to get a unique experience without spending a fortune is to check out local pop-up events, festivals or smaller gatherings,” says Charlie Neville, marketing director at JayWay Travel, a tour operator specializing in travel to Europe. “These are often put on by local artisans, chefs or artists and give you a real taste of the culture.” Some examples are food markets, small art exhibits and cultural celebrations. “You’ll get a genuine experience, and it’ll likely cost a lot less than the usual tourist attractions,” he says.

19. Travel during off-peak times

Traveling off-season can save a bundle. Hotels and airfare may be a lot less than traveling during peak tourist season. You may be able to upgrade your accommodations, stay longer or visit more attractions with the savings. “We’ve seen premium economy flights to Europe in January for less than $150 more than standard economy, and that includes extra legroom and better meals,” Neugarten says. He adds that hotels are more likely to upgrade your room for free during slow periods. If traveling during the off-season isn’t possible, take advantage of off-peak hours. “Restaurants offer lunch menus or pre-theater options that let you enjoy the same high-end food and ambiance as dinner without paying for a full-course meal,” Neville says. He also suggests booking tours during weekdays when you will get “the same experience, often with fewer crowds and a lower price.”

20. Explore natural areas

“Nature is one of the best upgrades you can get,” Barrionuevo says. If you are staying near a park, beach or other natural space, taking a leisurely walk “can give you the relaxation and beauty you need without spending a lot of money,” Barrionuevo explains. Near your destination, look for free local parks, botanical gardens, or state or national parks for a low-cost boost to your vacation.

21. Look for deals at the right time

An easy way to upgrade your vacation is to look for sales or travel deals. Travel Tuesday sales, which take place the Tuesday after Black Friday, may be a good time to book travel for the following year. You also can monitor flight prices for free using Google Flights, which will notify you when fares drop. Skyscanner and Kayak are also free services where you can sign up for price alerts. Use the savings to splurge on your trip. Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic, suggests booking cruises at the beginning of the year. “From January to March, the cruise industry is in a period called Wave Season, when the cruise lines roll out some of their best deals of the year en masse,” she says. To make the most of these deals, Gray Faust suggests looking for booking incentives that include credits for spa services, cabin upgrades, shore excursions, specialty dining packages and other onboard amenities. Research your location to see whether there are ways to save without compromising your trip. In Warsaw, many of the city’s major attractions are free on different days throughout the week. In Philadelphia, many museums are free on select Sundays each month. A City Pass, which offers admission to several attractions for one price, may also be a good value.

22. Consider using a travel agent

Even travelers who like to plan everything by themselves may benefit from consulting a travel agent. “The best way to upgrade your vacation would be to enlist the services of a destination specialist to help you plan and book your trip,” Clubb says. He believes that consulting someone with local expertise is invaluable because they can share insights and make itinerary suggestions you may not have thought of on your own. Plus, travel agents can “potentially save you money with exclusive offers available only to them thanks to the close relationships they’ve nurtured over the years with their trusted suppliers,” he says. Many travel agents do not charge travelers for their services,  because they earn commissions for every booking. However, it’s important to clarify this in advance since some travel agents may charge a planning fee.

23. Aim for elite status with an airline, hotel or cruise line

Many airlines, hotels and cruise lines offer perks to travelers who have elite status with their brand. For example, Hilton Honors members who reach gold status get free breakfast or a food and beverage credit, eligibility for room upgrades and a fifth night free. Marriott Bonvoy members who reach platinum elite status get late checkout, a welcome gift and lounge access. World of Hyatt members who reach Explorist status are eligible for room upgrades, free bottled water, premium internet and late checkout. Some airlines offer free checked bags and priority boarding to passengers with upper-tier status. Cruise lines offer perks such as discounts on drink packages and specialty dining. Travelers can earn status through bookings, using some travel credit cards or matching status with other travel providers.

24. Book direct for extra perks

Some hotels and airlines give guests perks for booking directly through their websites, apps or customer service lines. For example, Hyatt gives guests who book all-inclusive resorts directly early check-in, late checkout and a welcome gift. Passengers who book directly with Etihad Airways may be eligible for a complimentary hotel stay and airport shuttle. The iconic Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C., offers a free third night and deals on suites for guests who book directly.

25. Create a custom experience

“Why settle for crowded group tours when you can create your own experience?” asks Neville. Custom itineraries can help you “dive deeper into what interests you, whether it’s history, local culture or adventure,” with more flexibility than group tours, he says. Plus, “they’re often much more affordable than the luxury, fully guided tours that can really add up,” he explains. Daytrip offers private transportation with sightseeing, ArcheoRunning offers custom walking tours of Rome and Intrepid Urban Adventures offers private tours in cities around the world.
