AARP WI Connects With Vols at United Way’s READI Volunteer Celebration

AARP Wisconsin was proud to take part in United Way of Dane County’s READI (Retired Employees Are Dedicated Individuals) Volunteer Celebration, an event that brought together community-minded people who are helping make Dane County a stronger, more connected place to live.
Madison volunteer Ashish Bansal joined AARP Wisconsin staff Jim Flaherty and Claudia Boehlke in connecting with attendees, sharing information about AARP volunteer opportunities and inviting guests to reflect on a simple but meaningful question: What inspired you to get involved, and what keeps you coming back?

The responses reflected what AARP Wisconsin sees again and again through volunteer engagement: people give their time because service creates connection. Overwhelmingly, attendees said they were inspired by the opportunity to meet new friends. Close behind were responses centered on helping others, giving back and making a difference in the community.
Those answers speak to the heart of volunteerism. Volunteering is not only about filling a role or completing a task. It is about building relationships, strengthening community ties and finding purpose alongside others who care about improving the lives of their neighbors.
For AARP Wisconsin, the celebration was also an opportunity to introduce attendees to the many ways volunteers can get involved with AARP’s work across the state. Whether someone is interested in advocacy, community outreach, education, events or simply learning more, AARP offers opportunities for people to share their time, talents and lived experience in ways that support older adults and their families.
AARP’s national volunteer network includes more than 50,000 volunteers, with opportunities available both in person and from home. The organization provides training and support so volunteers can make a meaningful difference, build new connections and have fun along the way.
AARP Wisconsin thanks United Way of Dane County for creating space to celebrate volunteers and highlight the power of community service. We are also grateful to everyone who stopped by, shared their story and helped remind us why volunteer engagement matters: because people come together to make a difference, and often find friendship and purpose in the process.
