FIFA, Culture, and Community: How AARP Washington Volunteers Helped Bring Seattle’s CID to Life

When the excitement of the World Cup came to Seattle, AARP Washington volunteers stepped up in creative and meaningful ways to help showcase the vibrant culture, history, and community spirit of Seattle’s Chinatown–International District (CID).

The celebration began with a series of volunteer mural painting days in partnership with Friends of Little Sài Gòn at the Asian Plaza site. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help transform the space through a large-scale public art project honoring the neighborhood’s cultural heritage. Their efforts helped convert a previously vacant area into a welcoming community landmark while demonstrating the power of volunteer-driven placemaking.

“The most enjoyable part of mural painting was the new friendships I built with the community members from the Friends of Little Sai Gon," said Herman Gilman, AARP Volunteer. "They are a dynamic group of youthful, dedicated artists and activists who are bringing vitality to the rebirth of the Little Saigon neighborhood. I have lived in Seattle for 50 years and have seen many changes to urban neighborhoods," said Gilman. "I feel the mural project will be a lasting imprint on the rebirth of the Little Saigon neighborhood in years to come."

The momentum continued at the CID Summer Kickoff, a district-wide block party that brought together residents, visitors, small businesses, and community organizations. AARP volunteers welcomed attendees, shared resources, and helped promote FIFA-related activities designed to increase foot traffic and visibility for local businesses throughout the neighborhood.

Volunteers and staff alike found the event to be a meaningful opportunity to connect with community members. One participant shared, “I enjoyed meeting other AARP members. I also enjoyed talking to the many people who stopped by the booth.” Reflecting on the impact of the event, the volunteer noted, “This volunteer opportunity is a great way to publicize AARP Washington and the programs and outreach the organization is doing in communities across Washington state.”

One of the most memorable moments during the festivities was participation in a Guinness World Records™ record-breaking dim sum dinner event. Local residents and visitors gathered to celebrate one of the district’s most beloved culinary traditions, creating an unforgettable community experience that drew regional attention to the CID.
