Urge Washington lawmakers to support a statewide ban on cryptocurrency ATMs.

Cryptocurrency ATMs are giving scammers a fast, difficult-to-trace way to steal Washingtonians’ hard-earned savings. AARP Washington is calling on state lawmakers to ban these machines statewide—and Washington residents can help build momentum for action.

What Are Cryptocurrency ATMs?

Cryptocurrency ATMs — also called crypto ATMs or crypto kiosks — look like regular ATMs, but they are not connected to banks. They convert cash into cryptocurrency and are often located in gas stations, convenience stores, liquor stores, and grocery stores.

For criminals, these machines are an easy way to move stolen money quickly. Victims are often told to withdraw cash, stay on the phone, go to a kiosk, and deposit the money into what they believe is a “safe” or “protected” account. In reality, the money goes straight into a criminal-controlled digital wallet. Once the transaction is complete, the money is almost always gone for good.

Why statewide action matters

Several Washington communities have already banned crypto ATMs, but every resident deserves the same protection, regardless of ZIP code. A statewide ban is the clearest and most effective way to stop scammers from exploiting these machines. AARP will introduce legislation in 2027 to remove crypto ATMs from the fraud equation.

Every day these machines remain in Washington, more people are at risk of losing their savings to criminal scammers.
