How Utah’s Circuit Breaker Tax Relief Program Could Save You Money
An AARP survey found that aging in place is extremely important to 84% of Utahns 45 and older. Three in five of those surveyed say rising property taxes could impact their ability to remain in their home as they age.
But did you know you might qualify for state tax relief? The Circuit Breaker program offers tax relief to renters and homeowners who meet the requirements laid out by the Utah State Tax Commission.

HOW TO QUALIFY FOR THE HOMEOWNERS’ TAX CREDIT
- At least 66 years old
- Have a maximum income of $44,221
- Applications must be filed with your local county by September 1st.
- Maximum possible refund: $1,412
HOW TO QUALIFY FOR THE RENTER REFUND
- At least 66 years old
- Have a maximum income of $44,221
- Applications must be filed with the Utah State Tax Commission by December 31st.
- Maximum possible refund: $1,412
You might also qualify for tax relief if you fall into one of the following categories:
- Veterans with a Disability Exemption
- Active or Reserve Duty Armed Forces Exemption
- Blind Exemption
- Indigent Abatement/Deferral
- An unmarried surviving spouse, regardless of age
