Surveys show that travel is a top priority for many older Americans. In fact, over a third of American travelers are over 50. Whether you’re preparing for a week in Europe, a road trip to visit the grandchildren, or a Caribbean getaway, here are three ways to make the most out of your trip.

More Ways to Benefit

1.   Guided Tours

When traveling somewhere you’ve never been before, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. There’s so much to see and so much to do. Guided tours provide an easy and social solution.

Tours structure your day, introduce you to new people and help you navigate a new city. Many travel agencies offer tours designed for older adults. These travel groups allow you to meet new people while seeing the best a destination has to offer.

2.   Pack Light

Everyone has been guilty of overpacking. As you get older, though, hauling heavy bags around limits your freedom and mobility on your trip. It also makes unpacking an inconvenient chore.

Learning how to pack light improves the quality of your trip. Frequent travelers even have a name for this: packing for the 80%. In other words,: packing for the situation you’ll be in most of the time. Bring what you know you’ll need – and make room to get new, fun things along the way.

3.   Senior Discounts

Senior discounts are offered at more destinations than you might expect. Museums, hotels, transportation systems and theaters often offer these discounts – yes, even abroad. The Eurostar, for example, offers a senior discount for people 60+. Researching what discounts are available to you will help you save money on your trip.

No matter what adventure your summer has in store for you, these three tips will help you make the most of your trip. Get out there, have fun and travel safely.
