Scammers Target Service Members – Learn to Fight Back at September Events

When it comes to veterans, active military personnel and their families, the statistics tell a shocking story. Veterans, active-duty service members and their families are nearly 40% more likely than civilians to lose money to scams and fraud.

In late September, AARP North Dakota is bringing Juanita Jimenez-Soto, National Veterans & Military Families Advisor for AARP to Grand Forks and Minot to speak on this topic. She will keynote our free lunch events at the VFWs in Minot and Grand Forks where we’ll share information on fraud and scams specifically targeted at veterans and military families.

AARP has found that veterans are more likely than non-veterans to be targeted by repeated robocalls, phishing attempts and fraudulent “benefit assistance” offers that exploit their service background and access to federal programs. The Department of Veterans Affairs also warns that scammers often pose as VA officials, accredited claims representatives or benefits experts in an effort to obtain veterans’ personal or financial information.
