Share Your Knowledge Across North Dakota: Join the AARP North Dakota Speakers Bureau

Across North Dakota, AARP volunteers are making a difference one presentation at a time. From Cavalier to Bowman, and from Wahpeton to New Town, the AARP North Dakota Speakers Bureau is helping people stay informed, connected, and empowered through educational programs offered in communities large and small.

The Speakers Bureau is made up of trained volunteers who share important information on topics that matter to North Dakotans. Whether speaking at a local library, senior center, service club, church group, senior housing facility, or community organization, these volunteers help bring trusted resources directly to the people who need them.

Growing Demand Across the State

The need for Speakers Bureau presentations continues to grow. In 2025, AARP North Dakota volunteers delivered 81 presentations throughout the state. With requests continuing to increase, the program is on pace to exceed that number in 2026.

Today, approximately 25 trained and active Speakers Bureau members are sharing their time and talents. But with growing interest from communities across North Dakota, more volunteers are needed in all parts of the state.

Could You Be a Speaker?

You do not need to be a professional speaker to join the Speakers Bureau. If you enjoy meeting people, sharing information, and helping others learn, you may be a great fit.

Speakers Bureau Q&A with Volunteer Coordinator Barb Handy-Marchello

What makes someone a good candidate for the Speakers Bureau? Our speakers are people who enjoy speaking to a group and bring their lifetime experience to the topic they are presenting.

What do the speakers like the most about participating? Many of our speakers have said that they enjoy engaging with people in the audience who ask questions and offer some of their own experience to enhance the program. Speakers also say that they have a good feeling from presenting AARP topics which provide people with tools to navigate through various situations we all face.

How do speakers gain the knowledge needed to present on the topics and how are the topics chosen? Our programs are written by experts at AARP and designed to make aging safer and easier. All programs are presented with slides and handouts. After volunteers are trained, they can access these programs online where they will find the slides and a script to help them learn what to say with the slides. AARP North Dakota staff and other volunteers will support to new volunteers until they are ready to go out on their own.

Any other thoughts for potential speakers? This is a feel-good program. Whether the group we speak to is large or small, someone in the room will gather information they need to make their lives better. And as one of our volunteers has pointed out, whenever we prepare for a program, we learn, too.
