A Thrifty White Pharmacy in in West Fargo, N.D., is the site of a program between AARP and Thrifty White Pharmacy targeting family caregivers. For two days in May, the two organizations are creating an opportunity for shoppers to connect one on one with caregiving professionals, gaining guidance on the challenges that accompany helping loved ones navigate aging, health challenges and other situations.
The program will connect Thrifty White shoppers with retail pharmacists, experienced caregivers, and AARP’s caregiving expert Amy Goyer. Everyone is welcome and no registration is required.
A wide array of resources will be available, and people will be invited to take part in brief, private, caregiving conversations where a caregiving expert will:
o Listen to what is changing or becoming more demanding
o Offer reassurance and support
o Share relevant resources
o Provide practical next steps
“We know that a lot of people who might benefit from information about caregiving, don’t identify as ‘caregivers’. This pilot program addresses the fact that caregiving often emerges gradually—through increased checking in, coordinating appointments, managing medications, or helping with day-to-day tasks—well before someone adopts that label,” says AARP ND State Director Josh Askvig. “And a pharmacy is frequently a place where these helpful acts occur.”
